Show 0 w w Cartnos Fish Hcatfcheiry To deceive Mew Look by Pamela Robbins The Kamas Fish Hatchery which has seen approximately 34,000 visitors a year for the past 10 years is in the process of getting a gigantic face lift, according to UDWR (Utah Division Wildlife Resources) officer, Dana Dewey. Open year round, the Kamas site is the most widely visited Hatchery in the State of Utah- - something that will be largely curtailed when construction on the imposed new site begins. Just when the groundbreaking and construction will begin is not exactly known at this time? but those involved with the project are excitedly anticipating its beginning and completion. Those familiar with the present facility will be in for some definite and distinct changes- - all for the positive, beginning with the removal of the crumbling raceways, in which the fish are located. Plans call for a much larger parking area with a turning access for the school and tour buses which come often to the facility. Trees and a spacious lawn (fenced in) picnic area will also be available to those who wish to spend a little more time at the Hatchery. When planning for the new facility, one of the most important items to take into consideration was the planning for nore wet land preservation which wpuld add a natural and serene look to the area. A visitor arriving at the planned site will be able toi view the fish through special "viewing windows" without having to walk on planks over the cement raceways as is presently done. With the building of the new interpretation center. visitors will also be able to see more of the hands on operation of the hatchery. Trail areas will take visitors past wet land's and running streams. When the new facility is built, fish production is expected to double, going from 70,000 to 142,000 pounds of fish per year- - with the fish going into four raceways that will be 630 feet long. What is the purpose of the Hatcheries? In the wild, eggs have a 10 percent chance of survival as compared to 90 percent in the hatcheries. The hatchery system also supplements the natural supply of fish in Utah's lakes, streams and reservoirs-helpin- g to insure an adequate supply of sport fish for angler's. The new site is being built with funding from the CUP (Central Utah Project) and the State Legislature. "We hope to be able to catch more visitors on their way past and also to encourage tourists coming to Utah to visit us" when the new facility is built. "We hope to become a model Hatchery for the State head or twisted spines. Among fish found in Utah, rainbow trout are the most susceptible species, followed by kokanee salmon, golden trout, cutthroat trout, brook trout and brown trout. The parasite does not irifect human beings. Discovered in Utah in 1991 in a series of private hatcheriesmd adjacent streams and' lakes on the Fremont river drainage in Wayne county. Since then, it has been discovered in ten private hatcheries and adjacent waters in Cache, Weber and Sevier counties. Research is taking place at the present time to learn more about the impact of this disease on fish in the waters of Utah. "This is the worst disease heard of," said Dewey. "We are trying to educate the public on the disease which came from Asia in the 60's" "We would like people who should discover fish with deformities or black tails to notify the DWR immediately - giving the location and the date and time of when the fish were caught". When construction on the newly planned facility Fish abound in swarms trying to get some exercise as they move about freely in one of the cement raceways. begins, the Hatchery will be closed down for "Yes, we are worried but it isn't one year until it is approximately here yet," said Dewey when quesTliere is a lot of history completed. tioned about "Whirling Disease" located here at the facility which which has hit the scene.
