A Two Part Series BY DAVE ANDERTON Wave Editor Most people would never dream of encountering a lion while they explored the Wasatch Mountains. But this past summer, if you happened to be in the Snake Creek Canyon area, your chances of greeting a cam&Jtous feline were greatly increased during filming of the movie Meet... The Disney action-comeDeedles. The movies producer. Dale Pollock, is no stranger to Utah or even to Wasatch County. This is Pollock's third movie production in the HeberSummit County area in the last seven years. His other two films: "A Home of Our Own, starring Kathy Bates and "A Midnight Clear," starring Ethan Hawke are only a beginning of future movies yet to be nude in Utah by the acclaimed producer. When I knew I was doing a film about Yellowstone I was thinking, well where can I get the look of Yellowstone, where can I get experienced crews and where can I have a good experience Utah was the natural answer, says Pollock. The selection of Snake Creek Canyon was made after crews visited Yellowstone and were sure that the two sites matched. We came to Utah the first time to determine that we could do it, and then we went to Yellowstone to make sure that we were not wrong in our assessment, says Pollock. I think that our Yellowstone the Utah site is going to be nicer than the real Yellowstone. Our Old Faithful is going to be bigger than the real Old Faithful. Yellowstone is an incredible place and is unbelievable in its beauty, but I think we've done a really good job of finding some of the prettiest spots in this part of Utah: Bald Mountain, Minor Lake, Cascade Springs, Guardsman Pass. These am gorgeous locations and I think we are really going to showcase them well in our film. Besides finding a better location than the real Yellowstone,- Pollock said the National Park Service did not want anybody filming there during the height of the summer season. I dont think they had much sense of humor about their park and our doing a comedy. Its an extreme comedy, in terms of extreme sports and sometimes extreme humor, and they didnt feel like cooperating which is fine with us. Director Steve Meet... The Deedles Boyum parallels Pollocks sentiment when it comes to Utah, ...beautiful locations, very film friendly with a good film community. It has been very rewarding for our movie It has made Yellowstone look better than it ever has. Boyum has directed more than 1,000 films and television productions in a career that dy . has spanned 24 years. His most recent works D3: The include, George of the Jungle, Mighty Ducks, Jingle All the Way," Mr. Hollands Opus." and the Turner Network's Gettysburg and Crazy Horse. Other popular movies Boyum has assisted with encompass That Dam Cat," Beverly Hills Cop 3, Groundhog Day, and Patriot Games." In Meet... The Deedles, Boyum and Pollock bring together a strong working relationship that, according to Pollock, is very close, as it should be." According to Darryl Wright, unit publicist, the movie begins with Hawaiian-surfin- g twins Phil and Stew Deedle (Paul Walker and Steve Van Wormer) who mistakenly are recognized for park ranger recruits and launch into extreme action to save Yellowstone Park from pesky prairie dogs and a vengeful ranger, Frank Slater (Dennis Hopper), who is obsessed with stealing Old Faithful before its billionth birthday celebration. Equally important to the surroundings very hard to find qualified people. Pollock's and Boyums direct approach with people and genuine respect for others is naturally commuted to the cast and crew. Steve is awesome, says Paul Walker. He is so on top of each scene and is super efficient Directors all have a vision of the finished film in their heads, but I think that vision is even more clear with Steve. He knows the characters inside and out and he also knows every technical aspect so well. If we are going for coverage in a sequence, he knows precisely what he needs. When he hears it it sticks and that's it Pollock's origins began far away from Heber Valley, back in Ohio and Boston. In his early days, following college at Brandeis University, Dale Pollock did not earn a lot money. In fact, he started out writing movie reviews for an alternative weekly newspaper for free admission into the movies. The young writer's words were soon noticed and eventually Pollock found himself as chief film critic for Daily Variety and in 1980 became the Los Angeles Times chief entertainment correspondent. Today, Pollock is president of Peak Productions and has most recently produced Set It Off," which starred Jada Pinkett, Queen Latifah, Vivica Fox and Blair Underwood. He also produced Mrs. Winterbourne starring Shirley MacLaine, is Ricki Lake and Brendan Fraser. The transition from writer to movie pro- - . ducer came after Pollock wrote the biograI phy of George Lucas, Skywalking. Los was a journalist for 12 years. I was writing e. while I was working They would not give me a leave of absence, so it kind of fried me, because Fd write all week for the newspaper and then write the book on the weekends...My first film was in Israel. I didn't know...I had to go up and introduce afforded by Utah, Pollock conveys high praise myself to the crew members and ask what they for Utah crews' work ethic. I would say 80 did. That's how little I knew. As you do more percent of our crew is local, he says. They're films you get more experience, and now since not as jaded and cynical as the Los Angeles this is my 12th film. Im learning an enormous amount because Ive never done a film that crews. They're also not as expensive." relied on this many stunts, this much visual That positive review extends to the predominant religion. I just find, I like the people effects and this many animals. I had not here, says Pollock. They tend to be good worked with a lion before. And Doug Seus people. When I had a largely LDS crew on A with Bart, the bear..he is an amazing bear Home of Our Own they were terrific. It's a isnt he? Meet.. The Deedles" is a family oriented very strong work ethic among Mormons and also a very strong feeling of responsibility to film that involves stunt comedy, physical their fellow church members, and that was humor and silly humor. Patents need not be very refreshing and very valuable. I think I apprehensive over the movies content I have have probably a lot fewer LDS members on three children, I like the idea of making a PG this crew because so many people are working comedy that they can tee where I dont have to on the scries Promised Land' and Touched by be embarrassed because of sexual references or an Angel.' So a lot of crew I couldnt get, bin language. We dont have that here, says I've been very happy. My only problem right Pollock. now is there arent a lot of bodies to go around, Next week a dour look at the cast of it's very busy Salt Lake Gty and Utah right now there's a lot of stuff shooting and if s Meet The Deedles.
