Last week, as I thought about Veterans Day and the wars we, as a country, have experienced. I left out several near wan and the Korean Conflict. Not intentionally. When one of my sons recently re- turned from a school trip to Washington, D.C., and we were looking at the pictures he had taken of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, Arlington Cemetery, and the Korean Memorial, my heart Tilled with gratitude once again for the servicemen and women and the contributions they have made for our continuing freedom. While interviewing local students who went on the Close-U- p school tour, it was interesting to me that of the ten students that went all of them mentioned how emotional the memorials made them and how grateful they were for the sacrifices made for them. Once again, my faith in the youth and our country's future was made dear. 1 really am grateful for those in the service and their families who give so much. Speaking of gratitude, November is the month of Thanksgiving. Complete with big meals, celebra- - Thanks Officers Dear Editor: Your officers. Tell Me About It The Search For Life by Leon Simister, Columnist A distinguished sixty-on- e year old scientist. Carl Sagan, is perhaps the most successful of all his informed group at communicating with the general public about extremely complicated explanations of our Solar System. Universe and the Cosmos itself. His incredibly lucid seventeen-pag- e article "Life", in the Encyclopedia Brittanica, contains his detailed explanations of the diverse systems which, together, explain life. In delving into the physiological, metabolic, biochemical, genetic, and thermodynamic explanations of what things constitute life as we know it, there was one apparent missing factor. Nothing was mentioned about the spiritual aspect. When all of the other bits and pieces, segments, whistles and bells and other accouterments were presented, you had to ask the question, "Who - or what - breathed life into the organism as it came into being?" Dr. Sagan, although reputedly an atheist, refers many times in his writings as to the systematic, organized behavioral patterns of the cosmos in terms that suggest a higher intelligence, architect, or some son of superior guidance entity. Mankind, being largely subscriptive to religious persuasion, of course, firmly adheres to the belief that there is a God who created it all. Interestingly, in a TV news broadcast a week or so ago. a picture of the most recent photo taken by the Hubble Telescope was shown with the comment by the newscaster, "a picture of the Universe as Cod sees it. This remarkable photo showed large pillars of dust, and gas caused by an explosion m space of the type that scientists believe creates the beginning of new worlds out there. Tliis particular event happened 7.000 light years ago, with the light from it just reaching the camera lense of the Hubble telescope. It showed the dust and gas clouds as being one trillion miles high, and interspersed with minute pinpoints of light which were defined as being the births of new stars like our Sun. Scientists estimated these ts as being as large as our entire Solar System. The immensities of space are incomprehensible, but mankind is dutifully striving to determine if there is other life out there besides our own. They have finally decided that our broadcasting of radio messages into outer space, because of the time lapse for these waves to travel the infinite distances required, may not be the best method due to the fact that the answers from the receivers must take the same amount of time to travel back to us. So scientists have now erected, here in the United States an enormously powerful (186 trillion watts!) receiver for the purpose of gathering, hopefully, signals being broadcast into space by other intelligences. While common sense dictates that in the billions and billions of stars out there (and more being created all the time - Sagan estimates about 10 per year -and continuously since the creation of the Cosmos 10 billion years ago) it is a highly probable fact that there is more life out there in varying stages of advancement The inhabitants of some planets may be vastly technologically superior to us although Sagan states, "...technical civilizations tend, through the use of weapons of mass destruction, to de" stroy themselves shortly after they come into being. Other worlds' inhabitants may be in their technological infancy, while some may have organic life far different than our human concept. The thought for the day gives us a much different philosophy: "Lights come and go in the night sky. M6n, troubled at last by the things they build, may toss in their sleep and dream bad dreams, or lie awake while the meteors whisper greenly overhead. But nowhere in all space or on a thousand worlds will there be men to share our loneliness. There may be wisdom, there may be power, somewhere across space stare great instruments handled by strange, manipulative organs, may we as owners yearn. their yearning vainly at our floating cloud wrack, we have Nevertheless, in the nature of life and in principles of evolution our answer. Of men as are known on earth elsewhere, and beyond, there will be none forever." This time of the year seems to be either a happy one or a sad one or a combination of both, depending on what has transpired in life for you. If you are suffering the loss of someone close to you, going exthrough the misery of divorce, periencing health worries or just plain being stressed out, it may prove to be a little much to handle. With good friends and family to turn to, help can be found. If you don't have this support, life can get a little rough. At the present time, I have so much to be thankful for that sometimes I forget to express my gratitude. Perhaps this week I can spend a few moments to remedy this problem. The obvious things that come to my mind are: religious convictions, family, and friends. In the past year. I have added a lot of new things to my thankful list. It has been my privilege to meet so many new and interesting folks, who have added so much to my life. Several of them have moved away and are no longer employed by the county and I will miss them and the kindness they extended to me. Friends have always played a very important part in my life, and I hope they will continue to do so. I also hope I can contribute to their lives in the process. Experiencing new adventures enters die list as a fun way to spend the days. I have learned so many new and interesting things that have contributed greatly to my life. Learning about the workings of government in the county has been not only interesting but at the same time. When I think of all the years that I thought becoming involved in community affairs as well as county didn't matter, well, I feel sort of ashamed. Now, we are experiencing the thoughts and feelings once again through our children. What treasures each one of them are. Grandchildren add a lot to life with their enthusiasm and love. I am extremely grateful for pats on the back and hugs. They mean a lot to me and they help so much. Recently, I was reminded of how important it is to let people know that you care. I was told a story from a friend how they had written to someone expressing their feelings of love and gratitude and how they had received a phone call thanking them for their thoughtfulness. A short time later the person receiving the note passed away. In all. I really am thankful for the large and the small things that make my life so interesting. Also for the trials, because in the long run. hopefully. I will be a stronger and better person because of them. Hope your Thanksgiving Day is a great one.
