Show IN OF great railroad man pred acts coat coal shortage th s winter because of expansion of all lines of industry omaha E D H harriman Harrl man and his two sons attended ch i ch eh at trinity episcopal cathedral here sunday dur ing a break in the westward vacation trip which the railroad magnate Is making on his special train in answer to questions during the afternoon arter noon mr harriman said I 1 think ue shall have a coal short age this winter due to the general lu in crease of the fhe consumption of coal by reason of the great expansion of all lines of industry all over the country and also to the tact fact that some mines are not able to turn 0 it as much as they might because of lack of labor and then there is the shortage of 0 freight cars to be reckoned with noth and as to this car shortage I 1 want to say a word in reply to the charge that the railroads are wholly to blame for the car shortage the charge Is unjust in many respects numerous causes con spire to bring about a shortage or con in cars of which the people know nothing and they are causes for which the railroads are not res ble and cannot avoid mr mir harriman deprecated the recent tendency ot 61 rate legislation said he in the development and improvement of railroads one factor of vital consideration Is the relative cost of material and labor and the scale of rates tor for traffic labor Is scarce and much higher paid than ever material Is often hard to get and costs more yet rates have been reduced and tax increased this is not a consideration which holds out either to the people or the railroads the brightest pros pacts under the present conditions of the higher cost of labor and material the tendency of rates should remain stationery but is ita |
