"Chief Walker the Ute Indian chief with about 400 warriors made plans to massacre the settlers" after they had established themselves in a new fort. However, "old Chief Sowiette, who was friendly to the Mormons," thwarted the evil designs of the rampaging Indian chief and his followers.. "When Walker made known his plans Sowiette answered-hiby saying; 'And when you and your men get there to die ford, you will find me and my men helping the Mormons.'" North Park in Provo now carries the name of Sowiette Park as a mark of gratitude to die old chief. The rapid development of industries began in 1851. A grist mill was built by Isaac Higbee and James A. Smith, and the first store was opened by Thomas Williams. A carding mill was built and operated by Alanson Norton and Shadrach Holdaway, and the textile industry which brought Provo statewide recognition was begun. Other industries were a tannery, a pottery factory, and furniture The Summit County Bee .4 NOTICE TO WATER USERS The State Engineer received die following Application) to Exchange Water in Summit County (Locations in SLB&M.)
