City people are not the only ones in danger of being taken by schemes of cruel and ruthless individuals. Quite often we hear of one who has been duped out of a large sum of money that has supposedly been paid to improve their home or to add to their savings. On March 20, 1991 a preliminary injunction was issued against Family Star, a Utah Company, and eleven individuals erwwng them of operating a pyramid scheme. Participants of Family Star were told that e for a investment of $19.95, they could purchase a membership into Family Star and secure an early position in the program, ensuring them a large and profitable "downline" which to secure "commissions". Participants must then recruit five other people and so on down nine levels. Those signing up were not told exactly what kind of services one-tim- were being provided. In a Memorandum decision by Judge Ray M. Harding, he ruled that in effect, the defendants' activities constituted a pyramid scheme. Sane pyramid promoters attempt to make their schemes lode like a legitimate multi-levmarketing is a legitmarketing company. There is a rep at purchases of die product available and there is a small initial investment The Utah Department of Commerce has just published a brochure entitled, "Don't Get Soaked". This brochure provides consumers with ten vital tips to protect themselves from becoming a victim of investment fraud. It would be great to have that ability when it comes to investing, to take on any investment knowing you could not be hurt Fact is, that's just a dream, and unfortunately, fraud and financial difficulties are often the reality of bad investments. Investments involve taking risks, pure and simple. And while it is nearly impossible to eliminate all risks, there are certain elements investors should lode for when investing. This brochure provides those elements. To obtain a copy of the brochure, consumers can call the Department of Commerce at el -- The entire Jarman project includes other small stores along with a major grocery store would be 70,000 sq. ft With proper design and screening, it should help keep Summit County money in the county, provide jobs, and tax base Reed Schumann Drug Free Community Corner Im sure that we have all seen the bumper sticker that reads "Support Your Local Sheriff". That sticker contains an important message for all of us. The County Sheriff and his deputies, as well as the two Kamas City officers, deserve our support and cooperation. They work for all of us with a primary responsibility to enforce the laws that have been passed by federal, state, and local officials that we have elected. There may be occasions when we may not agree with die laws or the way in which they are being enforced We than have a responsi . bility to work for a change in the law to discuss our concerns with how laws have been enforced Opr law enforcement officers deserve our support We need to call them with information that will help them enforce die law. When they make an arrest that may not be popular, we need to stand by them fa the general good of the community. a The law enforcement officers a vital role in the tobacco, and other drug prevention program hoe in Kamas Valley.
