This magnificent tree waa a gift from Mrs. Charles B. Petty of Salt Lake City. Maggie Petty, was a lover of nature's beauty rod a seasoned traveler. When she returned from a trip to die Middle East in 1949, she brought back two cedar of Lebanon trees and presented one to Temple Square. The Bible tells in the book of 1st Kings that King Hiram of Tyre provided King Solomon with cedar trees for beams, pillars, and boards for both the temple rod Solomon's house. r The tree is characterized by its light red, fragrant, and durable wood. It is also noted far the size of its trunk and differs from most coniferous evergreen trees in that its branches are widespread. It was planted inside the east wall of Temple Square between die Temple and the South Visitors Center next to u small,, old. building. The cedar of Lebanon grew for many years until lightning struck the md building and severely damaged the tree. 72 confidential. Prevent Deer Damage To Trees and Shrubs The annual migration of mule deer from summer to winter range leaves many Wasatch Front home owners asking themselves "how cm I prevent deer from eating my ihnibsT" This year the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR)' will nuke available to the public a deer repellant that has been used experimentally in northern Utah to keep deer away from ornamental plants and orchards. The repellant, called "Magic Circle," is a bone tar oil that repels big game because of its strong smell. Initially, Magic Circle will be available only through the DWR Sait Lake City office, 1596 West North Temple. It is not yet available in stores. The product will be available at cost, which is $9 per quart Larry Davis, DWR conservation officer, has used Magic Circle with a high degree of success in his district "It really works well. The only drawback is that it smells really strong," he said. Davis warns however that no repellant is 100 percent successful all of the time. "The only sure way to prevent t damage is to put up an eight-foo- he said. Die DWR offers a free information packet that outlines the use of deer repel lants as well as fencing and burlap wraps to prevent damage to ornamental trees and shrubs. The packet, available at any DWR of fice, includes a reprint of an article titled, "Minimizing Browsing Damage by Deer Landscape Planning For Wildlife, written by wildlife experts Dermis Austin rod Allan Hash. The article lists plants recommended for landscaping in areas vulnerable to deer damage. According to the authors, with proper planning, homeowners can create attractive landscapes and still benefit wildlife. ana-ment- al fence To get the free information packet, atop by any DWR office or send a stamped envelope to: DWR, 1S96 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84116. r. !t I1 1 I 1 1 I |
