These facts are not things that most of us will ever find anywhere else, but they are small bits of knowledge good to know when conversation lags and we need to sound well read. There's a new killer chemical on the horizon, devastating to household pests but apparently safe for humans, animals and the environment. And it smells great. According to National Wildlife magazine, the magic ingredient is citrus oil from orange peels. Researchers have found it to be a valuable replacement for poison in killing houseflies, fleas and fire ants. Microscopic diamonds older than the sun and the planets have been found imbedded in three different kinds of meteorites. Chemically unaltered since before the solar system was formed four and a half bil- -. lion years ago, International Wildlife magazine reports that the diamonds may be the oldest particles ever discovered. They arc so small that trillions of them could fit on the head of a pin. Some 100 species of animals at the San Diego Zoo arc luxuriating on the latest innovation in zoo habitat waterbeds. According to International Wildlife magazine, the zoo models arc basically the same as human waterbeds, except they are covered with claw-proaluminum. Unlike heat lamps, they provide an even temperature similar to warm rocks or beds of leaves where animals sleep in the wild. A long worm that makes a sound like a bathtub draining may not seem like much of a tourist atof salvation of one Australian town. According to National Wildlife magazine, alter the local coal mine shut down, the townsfolk of (pop. 2,800) turned to their one notable resource, the great Gippsland gurgling earthworm. Colorful toy earthworms began appearing in shop windows, and the town launched an annual worm festival complete with parades and an earthworm queen. Perhaps the most sinister of tropical fruits is the akee, whose toxic flesh and seeds have killed more than 5,000 people since 1865. The report is that die fatal fruit is still popular in Jamaica. The akee is both safe and delicious when fully ripe and cooked. You might guess the fastest fish in the water is the shark, but you would be all wcL Researchers believe the sailfish is the fastest fish in the water. The sailfish can swim miles per hour. Imagine being a snowflake examiner for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration's weather forecasting lab. The report is that last winter the lab dispatched some 40 volunteers with hand held miscroscopcs to study the size and shape of snowflakes as they fell.
