Many women pass thorugh menopause with few problems or concerns, while others suffer moderate to severe discomfort hot flashes, vaginal itching and burning, drying and thinning of the vaginal lining which causes pain during sexual intercourse. Some of these major symptoms can be eased by taking ' ' estrogen to replace what your body no longer produces. This is known as estrogen replacement therapy. Before starting this therapy, your doctor will probably indo a thorough check-u- p cluding laboratory tests, to make sure you have no medical problem; . that ..would prevent your taking estrogen. Not every womaq can take this hormone. If you have had breast cancer, estrogen is almost never for you. Also, if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding, high blood pressure, active liver disease, or any problems with blood dotting, your doctor may suggest other ways to handle the discomforts of menopause. , But, if you get a dean bill of health, your doctor may prescribe small doses of in combination with progesterone, another female estrogen hormone that causes the lining of the womb (uterus) to be shed. You might experience light bleeding once a month at the end of the cycle of pills, similar to a menstrual period. This is normal, but bleeding at any other time is not and you should consult your doctor. A small percentage of women taking estrogen will also have minor side effects including swollen breasts, nausea, vaginal discharge, headaches and slight weight gain, much like premenstrual changes. As with any taking medication, you will face both risks and benefits with long term estrogen use. Estrogen has been linked to cancer of the womb, but this risk is decreased when progesterone is used with it. But, on the side, positive estrogen use can delay the onset, or present, .osteoporosis,, and may guard against heart disease. If your doctor puts you on estrogen replacement therapy, follow his or her instructions carefully and have a regular physical examination includ- ing a blood pressure check. Your doctor may wish to adjust your medication because your body's needs for estrogen fluctuate. Be sure to report any unexpected vaginal bleeding. By working together, you and your doctor can determine the best course of treatment. Jessica and Michael Most Popular What do Utahns names for some Last year 467 baby girls were named Jessica.
