Box 7, Coalville, UTAH 84017 - 94 Missy McNd, South Summit Area Reporter, 783-474- 8 DOTinCATION NO. 525640 f and Gentlemen Summit County: by Shirley In the United States and Canada, a day is set aside each year as Thanksgiving Day. This is a time when people have the opportunity to give thanks with feastings and prayers for all the blessings they may have received during the year. The first were Harvest Thanksgivings Festivals, thanking God for plentiful crops. For this reason. Thanksgiving is still celebrated in the fall. This is not a new idea. For of years, people in - thousands have gathered to lands many 7. give thanks after crops were in. The American Thanksgiving Day probably grew out of the English Harvest Home celebration. We usually celebrate with with big family dinners and family reunions. We usually picture Thanksgiving with a table filled to capacity with family gathered around. Thanksgiving is also a time for serious religious thinking, services and prayers. Thanksgiving Day in Summit County is surely family oriented, as almost all holidays and - celebrations are. Perhaps we are ' a little more conscientious and It . frugal than in years gone by. the be to seem doesn't quanities i, of different kinds of dishes for dinner, but the quality and love and friendship still abounds. Going to grandparents homes' for Thanksgiving used to be traditional. Now sometimes the . grandparents are invited to their children's homes. - rs At my own grandparents for Thanksgiving, the table was filled with good things to eat. and the aunts, uncles and cousins seemed to be endless around that big table. I don't know how much work went into those dinners. I'm sure a lot, and everyone seemed to have a good time visiting and laughing. Grandpa always sat at the head of the table and gave thanks for food and family. The food always tasted better at grandma's house, even if our mothers prepared it, than at home and we were always expected to be on our very best behavior. I would like to say right now, I am thankful that I have these family traditions to remember. They are special to me and if I could three things I am thankful for at this time it would be family, freedom and my religious beliefs. These three give me joy and make life worth list-onl- living.
