She- is a music ! and music. .specialist. She is a very talented person and those of us who have vher tapes realize this as her beautiful music flows and fills pur homes and our hearts with a ..new delightful sound. ' Combine a breath of freshness with determination, optimism, talent and a few strong currents of directed energy - and Sherree t Fitzgerald emerges, ready to ' take on the world of pop Mormon music. ' The local artist released her 'second tape, recorded both in 'English and Spanish, earlier this 'year on April 6. Sirviendo Con Gozo," the Spanish version of the tape "Sharing With Joy" is the first J.DS pop music recorded in "Spanish. It came about as the 'result of pooled talent, a dream find an obvious need. "Everyone knows someone who speaks Spanish or has been g a country," Sherree. "says "Many people "want their children to learn the 'language. Being bilingual is 'becoming a very practical aspect 'bf our lives." The excitement Sherree feels about her newest tape seems to 'Surround her. The young woman became fluent in Spanish a few bars ago while servinjg a piis$ion m Ecuador for The Church of 'Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. Her love of the language and for tlie people flows into and from n 'the melodies of the LDS songs. Tve tried to interpret acceptable Mormon songs and set them to orchestration and vocals that g and ire really cohesive." she says. fAlex Ibarra, a good friend from El Salvador, translated many of Sherree's selections and in fact, was partly responsible for the birth of the bilingual tape. After she'd been home a few months from her mission, Sherree taped some songs, made about 20 copies, and sent them to various families and friends in Ecuador. She made the "mistake" of giving one to Alex, who in his capacity as a Spanish teacher at the LDS Missionary Training Center, found a huge demand for Her music. "He kept asking me if he could duplicate it," Sherree says, "and reminding me that we need some good songs for missionaries in Spanish. No one had recorded any - so he and I went to work on Spanish-speakin- well-know- tight-fittin- if." ' Sherree and Alex were looking for a sound appropriate for LDS missionaries. They wanted ii , music which was in no way offensive" to Mormon listeners. "We chose songs that people already knew." explains Sherree. "because if people are going to learn a new song in a different language, they don't want to have to learn the song in addition to the language." As with many languages, Sherree found that singing Spanish was easier than speaking it and had little trouble capturing the accent. She credits Bill Stoker, a local professional pop music voice teacher with instructing her in. the correct methods of pronunciation which in turn helped her understand the analytical processes involved. With her two tapes, Sherree has made a significant contribution to the LDS Mormon pop music market, and plans to continue recording - if circumShe notes stances allow. however, that all the aspirations and work of Mormon musicians trying to progress in LDS pop is wasted if the public doesnt pick up on their efforts and support their music. "I really think if Mormons want to do something about the ugliness on radio - the worldly, secular suggestive lyrics and beat - then they should pay attention to Mormon music and where it's going. Sherree believes that if youth are exposed to wholesome music it will have a profound influence in their personal lives. "Parents should get some good selections in their music libraries. Almost anything would budding professionals in the area such as Roger Hoffmann, Jan Perry, Kristen Randle, Steven Kapp Perry, and Ron Williams strive to sustain each other and need support. She hails Jeff Herrera as a great benefactor to the LDS pop music movement because he is willing to gamble and finance unproven artists in order to develop the business. "That's more than most are' willing to do," she says. "I believe we have a long way to go. We have not as a people come to the ideal sound. I think we've had some great musicians, and I love them, but I think we can exceed what they have produced. The best songs have yet to be written." Sherree observes that the LDS people seem to be skeptical about past "LDS sounds," and are also skeptical about future LDS contemporary sounds - yet she points out that the "ideal" sound will continue to remain elusive unless the LDSmarket is willing to grow with the artists. Aren't we a people who believe in perfection as a process?" she questions. "I hope the public remembers that and is tolerant." Sherree is looking for new. Although she is optimistic about the progress and growth of LDS pop, Fitzgerald is currently sticking with a conservative policy because that is where the LDS audience is at and she doesn't want to appear too radical. It's hard to imagine Sherree Fitzgerald as radical - even by conservative LDS musical standards. Enthusiastic, innovative and creative might more accurately describe her aspirations. One major criticism of LDS pop is that much of it consists Of, simple lyrics covered with syrur Fitzgerald would like to see tb musical scores deepen into a more profound contemporary sound that offers spirituality S simultaneously. Sherree says he has both a gift and skill to create precise, coherent music - which is exactly what she is going for. "He's, not a specialist in Mormon music. He's trained in jazz, pop, country and classical, she says. "That's probably why he can zero in on the sound I want." Sherree believes that music is an extension of people "because - good-messag- e tion. "Interpretation is the most important thing... almost more than the song," she says. "That, plus the message, is good criteria for judging music of this type. The daughter of Jay and Lacy Fitzgerald began her singing career early. By the age of four she was standing on the fire hearth singing "Oh You Beautii while , her mother ful , Doll, played the piano. Lacy continued to help and encourage her daughter - and even played the piano accompaniment on her first tape. "The Spirit in All Things, came about as a desire to satisfy a desire," and as a result of deciding not to make a tape. "1 investigated every route, Sherree explains. At that time, it would have cost about $30,000 for the orchestration, etc. When I called dad and told him I wasnt going to do it, he told me I should come home to California where we could rent a studio for a few hours and make a sort of Book of Rememberance on tape. With mother in tow as pianist, Sherree did just that. "I had known for years the songs I wanted to do and how I wanted to sing them. Once the music was taped, the demand for it surfaced almost immediately. People kept requesting copies until Sherree's father finally suggested putting a cover on it and "calling it a Sheree Fitzgerald It perform. combination. of Dance presents NEW CLASSES NOW IN COALVILLE & HENEFER For Professional Instruction by a Qualified Instructor .
