Each physician at WCH undergoes a voluntary, rigorous review every 24 months, before he or she is given privileges to practice certain procedures at the hospital. Eleven active staff physicians and three courtesy staff physicians were recently granted privileges to perform specific procedures in one or more areas at Wasatch County Hospital beginning in January 1985. At WCH, physicians skills are reviewed for privileges by the credentialing review board which includes Wayne Terry, administrator; Neil J. Burton, MD, chairman of the committee; William Ferguson, MD; and Ross E. Jensen, MD. In addition, physicians applying for privileges are reviewed by the complete staff of physicians, and final approval for staff . privileges is given by the hospital board of directors. The 1985 active staff physicians include: Neil J. Burton, MD; William Ferguson, MD; W. Bart Christenson, Jr., MD; R. Raymond Green, MD; Katherine S. D. MD; Wayne Ferguson, Bos worth, MD; Jack D. Boggess, MD; George D. Pitts, MD; Ross E. Jensen, MD; Janet Kelly, MD; and Stanton McDonald, MD. The 1985 courtesy staff physicians include: David Hilding, MD; L. Vaun Mikesell, DDS; and Scott Daneley, DDS. "We require that within the last 48 months, each physician has competently performed the exprocedures .applied for, Administrator Terry. plains Then we consider whether or not their quality of performance has met the standards set by the Actually, although we formalize the credentialing process every 24 months, our physicians are monitored on an ongoing basis. For example, if one physician's patients consistently show a longer length of stay for a certain procedure than that which the JCAH considers normal, we would examine his or her records. We might find that the physicians patients have a higher than normal rate of infection. Then we would investigate the cause and find a solution, or put the physician on probation until we feel confidence of his or her skills, Terry continues. "However, after reviewing our physicians, I have to say that Wasatch County should feel very fortunate to have the large number of quality physicians we have practicing in our area, Terry concludes.
