According to the General Mills American Family Report, Family Health in an Era of Stress, 58 percent of the total family members ranked coping with high food costs as the number one problem. Although this study is now 3 years old, that problem remains a primary concern in our lives. Why is it that we feel food prices are so important? Any nutritionist would like to think that it is because of the consumers awareness of the nutritional effects on health. Adequate and appropriate food and good nutritional status arc investments in the future. On the other hand, the food budget has a fair amount of flexibility built into it whereas other factors in the family budget might be more unchangeable. The flexibility of a food budget should be protected to the extent that our nutritional intake is not jeopardized; however, food choices within food groups can be made which will reduce total food costs with equivalent nutrient intake. The food group which is responsible for the largest share of money expended on food is meat. In recent months consumers have been making meat selections from the less costly items. As a result the red meat prices have remained low. Although prices did go up this summer, they did not achieve the levels that .economists had predicted. There is still a rather wide cost difference in the type of meat which can be selected. In USDA Home and Garden Bullcting No. 94. Family Food Budgeting for Good Meals and Good Nutrition, the following suggestions are made to cut food costs: Check specials in food store -- advertisements. Look at each food critically. Is it costly compared to other foods you might serve? Will your family eat and enjoy it? Do you have the time and skill to prepare it? If its a convenience item, could you save by preparing it from basic ingredients? Learn to estimate accurately the amounts of food needed to feed your family. No eating pleasure or nutrients come from food that is bought and discarded. Keeping a record of the amount of food you throw away in a week may alert you to ways you can reduce waste. Use unit pricing to find the brand and container size of food that costs the least per pound, ounce, or pint. Even if its a better buy, select a food only if you can store it properly and conveniently and can use it without waste. -- -- -- holiday season always makes your visclothes shrink. According to Georgia Lauritzen, U.S.U. extension nutrition specialist. holiday feasts and parties always bring unwanted pounds so be sure to make the meals you have under you control as low caloric as possible. Before you leave for a holiday party, cat a light snack like an apple and a diet beverage, to take the edge off your appetite, Lauritzen says. This will help keep you from overeating fattening foods. When at the party, try to take small portions of the rich foods foods and more of the such as salads and vegetables, Lauritzen says. The holiday seasons is also one of the worst seasons for depression. and can be one of the loneliest times for us, even when surrounded by people. Dr. Ann Gcrson, Psychologist at FHP, a ffbalth maintenance has 10 tips on how to avoid holiday depression. Follow them, she says, and yon're more likely to survive the holidays iq a better frame of mind. Gcrcn's tips: Identify your hopes for the holidays. Be honest; discard the unrealistic, work at accomplishing the rest. Dont wait to be invited to a throw your own. Take the party initiative. Don't assume everyone but you has holiday plans. If you find yourself feeling lonely, examine your attitudes about others and Christmas. Research suggests that loneliness is the result of not liking others rather than not being liked. You may be rejecting potential involve- ments. If you will be alone, schedule enjoyable activities you never had time for; attend school choirs, community plays, other public events that you can share with others; visit an orphanage, a center for neglected children, a veterans hospital. You'll have less time to think of yourself if you do something for someone less fortunate. If you have reason to feel sad, don't lie to yourself and force yourself to be happy when youre not. Share your feelings with friends listen to others. If you expect to get lots of invitations and commitments, be selective and attend only those which have the most meaning for you (yes, you can get depressed from overcommitment!) ' Share responsibilities for holiday preparations so no one person feels burdened with the cooking, shopping, decorating, etc. Plan well ahead of time so there wont be a last minute panic. Have a clear understanding with your partner about holiday spending. Set a budget, stick to it, and avoid those January bills. Dont throw over your whole routine for the holidays. Make a special effort to continue your exercise program, eat regular meals, deal with everyday problems as they come up ... dont stockpile for the New Year. Be prepared for the holiday aftermath as well. Dont lull yourself with the illusion that the New Year will somehow erase all your old .problems, anxieties and frustrations.
