Show December 31, 1980 7E Homesteading Several of my friends are traveling home to wherever that is to participate in their familiar family festivities. Mary Barrena By In Homesteading I have tried to you with a few traditional practices, as well as introduce you to some of those current trends that make life in the mountains more enjoyable and satisfying. But somehow, Christinas will be more spirited and traditional if it snows. ' This is the time of year we often., save to ourselves with family and friends from our childhoods. self-sufficie-nt For those of us whose home is here in the mountains, or who have chosen to make this their home territory, the task is ours to provide our own traditions and participate in them with others. This is to me the spirit of Christmas to provide comfort and familiarity for my dear ones.' In other words, 1 am not trying to liberate mvself from ChristI am just not .. mas anymore that enlightened. To liberate myself from this time of sharing would be to alienate myself from too much fun and good food. On the other ' hand though, I refuse to subject myself to the hassle of the artificialness that is pushed on us at this most commercial of holidays. 1 simply do not need to pour money into worthless objects that are nothing more than industrial waste or prepared foods or at least I try to cut down on the junk. Not everyone can be talented enough to make all their gifts nor practical enough to know just the right gift for everyone, but I am one who appreciates the effort and time involved in a handmade and these are the product 1 hold from memories special past Christmases. So long as we persist in buying junk for Christmas, all the longer and harder commercialism will be pushed upon us at twined, J&nf' this time each year. Meanwhile, the small things that were so necessary to daily life, fresh baked goodies to home remedies for colds for instance, are eliminated but wait a minute, arent these our culture? Or is our culture now dependent on our purchasing power from Westinghouse and nationwide realty investors who would constantly supervise and dictate to us just where the favorable growth pattern is that we may wisely spend money. To "widely spend money is a very loose term here and all I understand about it is that every time something is sold the price goes up for and you the next buyer and I are often that buyer. So the wise part comes in when I sell out again for a profit. Yes, indeed, that is our culture, too. So why doesnt this part of our "culture appeal to me at Christmas? Perhaps I am and just droll, possessive, but I hang onto certain valuables because they are useful, out products that are often well-thoug- ht unlike good irreplaceable food, and I just gobble that up and save the memories. So I concentrate here on the small things that make me happy or more comfortable to live with my body and my surroundings. There seems to be something of value there, too. May you have' good thoughts this holiday season and also a Merry Christmas.
