It has several important purposes: to reduce the tax burden on these workers, to supplement wages, and to make work more attractive than welfare. Workers who qualify for the EIC and file a federal tax return can get back some or all of the federal income tax that was taken out of their pay during the year. They may also get extra cash back from the IRS. Even workers whose earnings are too small to have paid taxes can get the EIC. Whats more, the EIC reduces any additional taxes workers may owe. Who can get the EIC and how much is it worth? Single or married people who worked full time or part time at some point in 1998 can qualify for EIC, depending on their income: Workers who were raising one child in their home and had family income of less than $26,473 in 1998 can get an EIC of up to $2,271. Workers who were raising more than one child in their home and had family income of less than $30,095 in 1998 can get up to $3,756. The largest EIC benefit is for working families with two or more children. Workers who were not raising children in their home but were between the ages of 25 and 64 on December 31, 1998 and had income below $10,030 can get an EIC of up to $341. Which children qualify for the EIC? They include: sons, daughters, stepchildren, grandchildren, and adopted children, as long as they lived with the taxpayer for more than half of the year. Nieces, nephews, children of a friend, or foster children can be qualifying children if they lived with the 1 SHEDS, BARNS Fence Posts Uprights 2" build your own with 8" 8" ..370ft. ..390ft. ..490ft. The bum continually questions how much money his hostage lawyers have donated to charities. This motivates the young lawyer to seek out some of these homeless shelters and places. He begins to serve them and becomes friends with someone who has worked with them for many years. The young lawyer learns about the homeless, but he also learns about love and service. CHILD TAX CREDIT is what Congress passed in 1997 for taxpayers raising dependent children. This new credit is worth up to $400 per dependent child under age 17 in 1998, and can be claimed on a taxpayer's 1998 federal tax return. The credit will increase to $500 per child beginning in 1999. Generally a familys credit is equal to the total amount of their income tax for the year, up to a maximum of $400 per dependent child in 1998. For example, Mr. and Mrs. Smith have two children and earned S20.000 in 1998. Their total federal income tax for the year is $315. They are eligible for the Child Tax Credit, so their credit is $315-n$800. This credit is new, so share the information with others who might qualify. The Child Tax Credit is different than the Child and Dependent Care Credit.. see next section. 3. CHILD & DEPENDENT CARE CREDIT is a tax benefit that helps families pay for child care they need in order to work or to look for work. The credit also is available to families that must pay for the care of a spouse or an adult dependent who is incapable of caring for himself or herself. The size of the Child and Dependent Care Credit depends on the number of children or dependents in care, a familys income, and the amount the family paid for care during the year. It can be as much as $720 for families with one child or dependent in care and $1,440 for families with more than one child or dependent in care. Families must file a federal income tax return - either Form 1040 or 1040 A - and attach a separate schedule or form with their return. With Form 1040. families must attach Form 2441. With Form 1040A. families use Schedule 2.
