Utah's 1998 general bull elk hunt runs Oct. "Elk hunting success this year should be very similar to last year," said Mike Welch, big game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources Utah's statewide elk population is about 60,000 animals, only 5,000 short of a statewide objective of about 65.000 and the highest since elk were reintroduced to Utah at the start of the century. Welch credits management strategies over the past 15 to 20 years, that reduced the number of cow elk taken and allowed the herds to grow, as a main reason for the growth of Utah's elk populations. "We also have belter elk habitat now," he said, citing the natural succession of shrub habitats to grass habitats, and wildfires, as among the reasons for the habitat changes. Permits to hunt on any bull units and spike bull only units are still available from hunting license agents statewide and Division offices in Ogden.
