Jean Dixon Westring, age 84, passed away June 30, 1998 at her home in Nephi, Utah. She was born December 6, 1913 in Payson, Utah to Charles C.F. and Adelia Ann Schaerrer Dixon. She married Raymond Theodore (Theo) Westring June 1, 1936 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died December 17, 1989. Survived by her children, Renae Mangelson, Janet (Kay) Stuart, Colleen Allen and Jerry (Sandra) Westring; brothers: Junior Dixon, Sheldon Dixon and Paul Dixon; 26 grandchil- dren, 40 According to Greg Abbott of APHIS (Animal Plant Health Inspection Services), if Mormon crickets are bad this year, they could be much worse next year. After Abbott surveyed a threatened invasion of the huge grasshoppers near Elberta, he came to that conclusion. Hie problem is lack of funding to stop the ravenous insects.. which are really grasshoppers and not crickets. Abbott met recently on the west side of Utah Lake with state entomologists, county agricultural representatives, local landowners and representatives of LDS Church farms in the area, to assess the problem. Abbott said that they could only treat insects on federal Bureau of Land Management lands, and not on private lands adjacent to them. He said, "The problem is that our available funds to control the insects will be depleted by the end of this year, and there are no more funds. Our agency has not received additional funds since 1994, so we have no money to fight an insect invasion." He pointed out that with the number of adult crickets present this year, a big rise in the population is anticipated for next year. He has hired one additional employee, so three of them could begin working on the insect control in the mining area between Eureka and Elberta. They would use a carbaryl bait, which will not only kill the crickets that eat it, but also other crickets that eat their dead, he added.
