The article is a reprint following from the Desert News. Rep. Jim Hansen deserves credit for his lateral arabesque toward middle ground on the Utah wilderness issue, but don't be surprised if environmentalists fail to show up at the dance. Hansen recently unveiled a bill proposing that 2.74 million acres of public land in Utah be designated as wilderness. That adds 6(X).(XX) acres to the plan proffered by the state's congressional delegation in 1995. Il remains far short, however, of the 5.7 million acres of wilderness sought by environmental groups. People on the weighty side of the issue have shown no propensity to budge thus far and have spurned any suggestions of wilderness piecedesignating meal. That includes rejection of Gov. Mike Leavitt's proposal to set aside areas that everyone agrees should be protected. But with much of the free world still chortling at recent environmentalist proposals to dram Lake Powell, this would be a gixxl time for such groups to regain a little credibility through discovering (he "C" word.. compromise. Hansen's bill risks some alienation among his rural constituents. but Emery and Garfield county commissioners' initial reactions seemed accepting. The areas that gain (he most wilderness under his proposal arc the Book Cliffs, Grand c Gulch and (he Grand National Monument. Slaircasc-Escalant- Hansen has taken his wild west show on the road this week, meeting with state and national officials, including Bureau of Land Management Director Pat Shea. Gov. Mike Lcavius reaction a week ago was that his evaluation would focus on the bill's potential for success.
