House Bill 32. sponsored by Rep. John Valentine, will require sportsmen to pay $5.25 when purchasing a Wildlife Habitat Authorization. instead of (he $5 they've paid since the Habitat Authorization program began in January 19. The surcharge will be allocated to Utah's counties, to help fund search and rescue efforts to locate spomuen and others, should they become lost or hurt. After looking at various options, die Utah legislature felt having sportmen pay 25 cents at the lime (hey purchase a Wildlife Habitat Authorization would be an easy way to obtain needed search and rescue funds, said Steve Stoinski, legislative liason for die Division of Wildlife Resources. The bill also requires a surcharge on recreational vehicle taxes sportsmen and otltcrs pay. to help raise the needed search and rescue funds. Stoinski said. Recreational vehicles include boats, vehicles, offroad motorcycles and snowmobiles. In addition, the bill appropriates $80,000 from the stale general fund to help provide needed county search and rescue bill funds. Valentine's was passed by the Utah Legislature during its 1997 general session.
