Despite their seeming omnipreschildhood quesence. the age-oi- d "Is there tion really a Santa Claus?" can still paralyze most parents. Parents consume enormous amounts of energy worrying about the place Santa should or shouldnt have in young children's lives, according to Dr. Ann Austin, early childhood specialist and associate dean in the Utah State University College of FamiAustin says ly Life. if perpetuatwonder parents may ing a myth is deceitful and if their children will mistrust them when the truth finally comes out. "These arc needless worries because stories of Santa will not hurt children. Those who would resent their parents for Santa "lies" would find other fodder if Santa stories weren't there." Austin says. Dr. Glen Jenson, family and human development specialist in the college, says children go through a gradual transition from belief to disbelief. Laying aside the Santa myth is just another of societys rites of passage. He says surrendering the myth allows children to join adults in the conspiracy to make other children happy. A joking noncommittal attitude from parents will make the transition easier. By the time children arc seven or eight, they are likely to understand that Santa Claus really represents the spirit of giving to others. Religious explanations of the origin of Christmas assist in making the transition without disappointment or a feeling of being misled, Jenson says. Austin agrees that SAntas transition from myth to reality is an important part of child development. "Children arc proud to have made this intellectual discovery. It is a milestone and gives the youngster a sense of perspective to know that at one time something was believed, but it now has been replaced by mature realism. What remains is a warm glow of folklore." Austin says. Hunting season is winding down for many wildlife species. But what about rabbits? Duck hunting will continue for a few more weeks, but for land lovers, only chukar hunts continue. Cottontails are on their down cycle and beginning to rebuild. But snowshoc hares are worthy of your best pursuit skills. "You need to look for snowshoc hares above 7,000 feet in elevation," says Dean Mitchell, Upland Game Program Coordinator for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. "These hares live m coniferous forest with pine trees, aspen, and mixed mountain brush." Utah has three species of hare and three species of rabbit. The hares include both the white-taile- d and black-taile- d jackrabbit along with the snowshoc hare. For rabbits, there arc the pygmy, mountain, and desert cottontail. Someone decides they no longer want their goldfish, guppies or other aquarium tenants, so they decide to "free" them into Utahs lakes, reservoirs and streams. Bad idea. Goldfish, for example, can reproduce and grow in the wild. The result can be a nuisance very much iike its close relative, the carp, which devours the vegetation, depriving other fish of food. In San Juan County, the practice of releasing unwanted goldfish into nearby Recapture Reservoir has produced something of a giant goldfish bowl. As a result, trout fishing has declined dramatically. About the only way to rid the reservoir of the unwanted inhabitants is to apply chemical treatments, which also kill sport fish. So what can you do? Try adopting them out with another family, instead of forcing them on Utah's fisheries.
