Jensen's guilty plea is the result of a joint criminal investigation conducted by the U.S. Department of Interiors Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR). The investigation began after a family camping on public lands near Arches National Park awoke to find their golden retriever dead during Easter Weekend of 1992. DWR officers found a poisoned sheep leg near their camp. Jensen became a suspect after more poisoned sheep legs and dead animals and migratory birds, including a golden eagle, were found on BLM grazing land leased by his family. The public lands where the dog was poisoned were within Jensen's grazing allotment. Forensic laboratory analyses identified the poison as Carbofuran. Carbofuran is highly toxic when used in violation of the manufacturers label regarding its restricted application. Jensen admitted in District Court that he had treated sheep legs with the pesticide Carbofuran and had placed them out to kill predators on his BLM grazing allotment in violation of Federal law. U.S. District Judge Dee Bcnscn sentenced Jensen to a $2,000 fine, $500 restitution to the victimsowncrs of the poisoned dog, $25 victim fee, and year probation. BLM considers predator ranchers an immiby poisoning human health and safety nent hazard as well as a serious violation of Federal law. BLM will continue to pursue criminal and civil sanctions against violators. 1 1996 elections p.m. October 12 will be "What is America, and What do We Want It To Be?"
