This goes for herbicides used home by some gardeners, says Larry Sagers, Utah State University Extension horticulturist in Salt Lake City. "Eas week at our diagnostic clinic we see numerous samples from gardeners chemimisuse of who, through cals, cause severe damage to their own plants," he says. The very word, herbicide, means "to kill the plant," he says. "If someone truly invented a weed killer that you could spray over the entire yard and only the weeds would die, he or whe would be a millionaire many times over," he says. "Herbicides rely on the user and selective application techniques to control undesirable plants. " The dozens of different weed killers on the market are divided into categories based on chemical composition and use, Sager says. over-zealo- well-meani- us ng are hcrbicid to seed germination applied prior and kill sprouting plants. These Pre-emerg- products are only effective if applied before plants start growing and usually dont cause serious problems if used according to label directions, he says. Weed killers generating the most complaints arc lawn weed Looking back at 1916 Reckless drivers plague Eureka killers and vegetation tree could pick up the herbicide controls or soil sterilants. Lawn from 125 feet away, he long-ter- m weed killers contain several ingredients with similar modes of action such as 2,4-MCPP and he dicamba, says. These products selectively kill broadleaved plants. When used at correct rales, he says, they do not kill turfgrass. Lawn weed killers cause characteristic twisting, cupping or make a parallel vein symptom on the leaves. All broadleaved plants can be damaged by these chemicals, particularly tomatoes, grapes, beans and roses. Another major problem, according to Sagers, is with longterm vegetation controls or soil sterlants. These products include the triazine herbicides such as pramitol and razine. "Soil sterilants, as they are commonly called, represent a serius hazard to desirable vegetation," he says. "I am familiar with one landscape where this product was misused 14 years the trees still show dam- ago and t age. The herbicide damage is manifest as a yellow leaf with green veins. The damage appears similar to iron chlorosis except the veins look as though they have been painted in with a broad marker or paintbrush rather than the narrow veins that show with iron chlorosis, he says. Damage can be severe or fatal and often affects trees and shrubs years after - particularly, if roots grow into treated soil and pick up the herbicide. Tree roots extend two and half times the height of the tree. That means a D, 50-fo- ot says. Triazine herbicides are often used under asphalt to prevent weed growth. Roots grow under the pavement and pick up the chemical. "Once the product is in the soil and plants arc damaged the herbicide, there is no effective antidote for the poisoning," he says. "Never use these products because the potential risk is far too great to outweigh any benefits." Deer hunt will be good Expectations arc high for a good level of success this year on the general season deer hunt. A mild winter and plenty of forage, along with a change in deer management, and it all adds up to improved conditions for animals. "Based on the information we collected from last years hunt." says Wes Shields, Wildlife Chief for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, "We had around a 30 success rate with good success coming in northern region units which were hit hardest from the previous winter." Traditionally, general season hunt success runs from 20 to 30 percent. Based on the numbers of deer wildlife biologists see this summer, success rates may go even higher. "This is the first good year hunters can expect to see more deer since the harsh winter of a couple of years ago." (Special to The Herald-Republica- n) Eureka, July 21, 1916--Fran- k Harris is taking the census of the Mammoth schools. Messrs. Hocman, Oglesby and Davis, officials of the Emerald Mining Company, were looking over the property early in the week. After several postponements and delays the Crescent Theatre will reopen in this city next Saturday night. John Rosa, Albert Smith, Wesley Morton and James Hannifin were in Nephi today for the purpose of securing the second citizen papers for Mr. Rosa and Smith. Thill get their final papers soon. Some weeks ago the city started a campaign officers against speeding and reckless driving of automobiles in the city limits. The majority of the auto owners are obeying the warnings of the officers, but there are still many road hogs and drivers who persist in using the streets of the district as speedways. An example of the reckless driving in which some people indulge was illustrated here last Sunday evening when A.F. Miller of this city was struck by a motorcycle as he stepped from an evening train. While his injuries were slight, nevertheless it shows how careless some of the Tintic auto owners and motorists are. (Submitted by John Schmitt) SILVER CLUE5 New Hours!!
