Show Volume Eighty-Eig- EUREKA, UTAH - October 29, 1993 ht Three candidates will face off on Tuesday, November 2, 1993, for the position of Eureka City Mayor, while five hopefuls are in the race for two seats on Eureka City Council. Polls will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m. All registered voters in Eureka's three voting districts, will cast their votes at the Memorial Building. Election judges are Leah Towers, Helen Ferris and Mac Bigler. Counting judges are Pat Brady, Audrey Sanderson and Denise Hannifin. Information about the candidates follows: Philip D. (Don) Treloar Philip D. (Don) Treloar was bom in Eureka September 4, 1920. He attended Eureka Elementary and Tintic High School, Married graduating in 1938. Helen Maxine Taylor May 31, 1941.. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 25, 1942 and was Honorably discharged on October 15, 1945 in San Francis- co. Jack W. Ekker is a candidate for Eureka City Mayor. He was born and reared in the Eureka area, and is a graduate of Tintic High School. Besides in the serving military, he has served as a security guard at Hill Air Force Base, and has worked undercover for the Salt Lake Police Department. Scouting has always been one of his primary interests and he spent 40 years working with the in various positions, B.S.A. including four terms as scoutmaster. Six summers were spent with the Boy Scouts at Camp Maple Dell, as handicrafts director. Ekker states, "Despite the fact that my wife and I have lived in many places, I consider Eureka my home, and if elected as mayor, I will do everything in my power, in tandem with the city council, to achieve good will and harmony between city government and Eureka citizens. I would like to see Eureka have its own police department; its own garbage disposal system; and a reduction in the cost of utilities. My goal is to promote our community as a safe and pleasant place to live. r wf. He was employed in Insurance Claims for 36 years, retiring Oct. 1, 1981. In November 1983, he returned to Eureka. Mr. Treloar was elected Mayor 1990 and since has worked towards improving services and quality of life in Eureka. "Look around and note the attractive homes, new fences, new paint, etc. Nearly all of the city streets have been surfaced and the rest will be done in time. Equipment badly needed for years has been purchased. Although I am fairly new to Eureka, I do have strong family ties to this city. I spent a great deal of time here while growing up. I have come to love and appreciate everything this area has to offer. Recently we haVe experienced, an increased interest in our com- munity by people wanting to settle here. I feel this trend will continue to increase in the coming years. Although I do not happily embrace the idea of Eureka becoming a "big town", I feel that we can take steps to improve the quality of life here. I feel this would ensure that we would attract young families and citizens, both of. upstanding I to be crucial to the feel, which, future of Eureka. Mary Lou Taylor Number 44 June L. McNulty June L. McNulty is hoping for to Eureka City Council. He is presently serving his second term as city councilman, and thus, has had first-han- d experience in the workings of city government. Mr. McNulty is a lifetime resident of the Tintic area. He is a retired Civil Service employee from Tooele Army Depot. Since he is retired, he feels that he is readily available to help when a problem comes up that requires additional physical labor. He has always been interested in the historical value of the City of Eureka; tourist trade; and other ways to keep the community going. He is familiar with City finances and problems. I June states, "If will continue to work for the betterment of the City." Draper I i - . i. Mary Lou Taylor Draper is a candidate for a seat on Eureka City Council. She is a native of Eureka, the daughter of Mark and Bernice Taylor. Her husis band Michael Draper, and she is the mother of three children, Rodney, Michael and Heidi, all of whom reside in Eureka. She is grandmother to six grandchildren. Mrs. Draper is a former Eurand eka City Councilwoman states that she would like to have another chance at being on the council, as she forsees mayor changes for Eureka and she would like to be a part of this growing process. "If elected," she says, "I will do everything I can to work for the betterment of the city and all I firmly believe in its citizens. Eureka and am convinced we have a promising future." Cynthia Kirgan is running for a seat on Eureka City Council. She is the daughter of Arnold and Iris Swenson and is married to Terry Kirgan. She makes the following statement... "I am married and the mother of two young children, Jace, 3 years old, and Dayna, 1 1 months. I have lived in Eureka all my life. I want Eureka to stay the kind of place where I and other parents want to stay and raise our children. I also want Eureka to move into the future, without losing its I would "small town" charm. like Eureka to be a "people friendly" place and I thing the best place to start is the City Council. I believe my joining the City Council will help establish this new attitude." . Marian Larsen Seamons is seeking a seat on Eureka City Council. She states, "I was born in Mammoth, Utah; educated in the Tintic School District. My roots were here from the early times of mining. My great grandfather, grandfather and father, and now husband and sons have worked in the mines here. My husband is Sharon Seamons, who was born in Dividend, Utah. We have 14 natural children, 6 foster children, and 2 Also, forty adopted children. grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildr- Election (See Page 3) Dont forget to fall back!! Jay W. Evans Jay W. Evans is seeking to Eureka City Council. Jay has been a Eureka resident for 21 years, is married to the former Sandy Butler, and is the father of two sons. lie is a well respected member of the community, as well as a highly visible one.. having been employed by Tintic School District for 24 Its that timeof the year again, folks!
