Founded November 13, 1894, the Genealogical Society of Utah was to be benevolent in collecting, complaining, establishing and maintaining a genealogical library for the use and benefit of its members and others, educational in disseminating information regarding genealogical matters; and also religious. When the society was orga- nized, Mormon Apostle Franklin D. Richards was named president. Among the first members of n the board were such pioneers as Wilford Woodruff, George Q. Cannon, Lorenzo Snow and Joseph F. Smith. In 1987 the name was changed from Genealogical to Family History. Its rapid, continuous growth necessitated the library moving into five different locations before well-know- its final home in the new Family History Library on West Temple in Salt Lake City.
