Another U.S. group was forced to abandon their bus to protestors earlier that morning. Our guide saw real democracy in action when my group independently voted and share our bus to squeeze-i- n with them. Once in the bus and out onto the street, we couldnt believe our eyes! The entire city had been brought to an absolute stand-sti- ll by the people blocking intersec- - tions with commandeered buses, trolleys and traffic dividers. Shanghai, the third largest city in the world, has a population of 14 million people; it seemed that all of them had taken to the streets! Illegal faxs from the states had been posted in the public squares and the people were aware of the clashes in Beijing. They were outraged. They were not overtly aggressive towards us, but we knew something was wrong when several men attempted to board our bus, and still more were waving to us to stop. from the Less than a quarter-mil- e hotel, our route was blocked by a municipal bus across the intersec- tion. Its windows had been smashed and the tires slashed. Reversing direction, we found our egress blocked by a similar blockade. Each direction we tried was blocked. Our guide and driver feared that our bus too would be commandeered and decided to get us back to the hotel as soon as possible. Using a -- and scries of narrow to sometimes appealing protestors blocking the streets, our driver was ultimately able to return us safely to the hotel. I found a fax transmission in my room from the U.S. Consulate Generals office; paraphrasing it read: The situation is extremely dangerous. Your personal safety cannot be assured.
