And I stayed around town waiting for the love of my life, Bobbie, to graduate. Then we would set out to conquer the world. Bobbie became one of the worlds first car hops. At JUDS-o- n the summit. I had worked at The Chief as a topman until a strike closed the mine. That topping job was supremely satisfying. If nothing, such as falling metal prices, rising labor costs had intervened, Id still be happily topping at The Chief. But, we went on strike or something, and I went to Tintic Junction and hopped a freight. This trip was something comparable to The Exodus. We traveled across The Great American Desert in an open box car loaded with scrap metal (in 130 degree temperatures)headed for Japan which some of us might encounter later. The freight took us to us to Las Vegas. I was financed with $20 that I had raised to support my journey. It took the 21" dealer less than four minutes to relieve me of my stake. So I went to the freight yard and decided to take a nap on some railroad ties. Soon I felt a tap on my foot. A railroad bull with a more than adequate club tapped my foot. Where you goin Boy? he asked. I was 18. Los Angeles, I answered. Well, he replied, you are in luck..that train over there is leaving for LA. at 10 p.m. Be sure you are on it. I was so filled with gratitude, I was tempted to ask him, Do you have a pencil and paper and a stamp so I can write to my mother in PUBUC NOTICE: Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) Application Due. SSBG Funding require a 25 local match. Published in the Eureka Reporter March 3, 1989. Eureka, Utah about the kindness and consideration of the Las Vegas Railroad Police? But I just said thank you, and prepared to get on the train. Which I did. Not being a pro, I did not know how to ride the rods. Those are the underpinnings of freight cars. So I rode the reefers. To you uninitiated, the reefers were refrigerator cars. At each end of refrigerator cars were containers for ice. And when there was no ice, we steerage class riders rode the reefers. So I crawled down into the reefer box to escape the soot from the n engines. Unfortunately, my reefer mates were a group of migrant Latins who had, without question, subsisted on beans during their entire summer in Idaho. Never had soot seemed so sweet as when I left the reefer. Somehow the freight pulled in LA. I called Mrs. Ostrander (old coal-drive- family friend). She called my mother. They agreed that I had always been a problem child. But they had never ridden a freight. Bobbie Virginia Bryan Sorenson McCormick joined me a few months later. That was 50 years ago.
