You may fool the Utah Highway Patrol by walking a straight line, but your eyes might give you away. A new standardized field sobriety test known as the horizontal gaze nystagmus test was the subject of a class taught last week in Nephi by Gary Taylor and Burtis Quarnberg, Highway Patrol breath test specialists. The test is 78 percent effective in detecting drunken drivers. 16-ho- ur Lady Elks Eureka Ladies of Elks Club has scheduled the annual Christmas party on Tues., Dec. 11, at 7 PM in the Elks Lodge rooms. Quarnberg said officers are children trained to watch for certain eye movements as the subject of the test, without moving his head, watches the head of a pen moved to the extreme right and left. As they watch the object with .10 alcohol, their eyeballs jerk as they do it, he explained. As part of the training, officers tested eight people some of whom had had a few drinks and some who had drank nothing. The officers were to determine the level of alcohol consumed by each of the subjects. Three females and five males volunteered to be tested. The test is in three parts. The first two parts of the test are much like older sobriety tests. In the second part of the test, for example, the policemen asks the volunteers to walk nine steps forward heel to toe, turn, and walk nine steps back. They then were asked to hold one foot in the air and count while balancing. The final portion of the sobriety test is the eye test. Its the eyes that really give the drinker away, explained Juab County Deputy LuWayne Walker. Ramon Memmott of the Nephi City Police Department agreed. One guy could stand on one foot but it was his eyes that gave him away, he said. The test gives an officer a better handle on the level of sobriety, explained Taylor. He said all officers in the state will have a chance to receive the training in the next few months. The old system used to be a pass-fa- il sort of test, but the eye nystagmus test is a divided attention test and is very helpful since driving is a divided attention requirement.
