People put up with noise rather than avoid it, primarily because most noise is hard to avoid. But it extracts a toll. An inordinately high incidence of ulcers has been reported among workers in noisy workplaces. Sound has been found to change the proteins of smooth intestinal muscle, thus helping substantiate observations that noise increases the likelihood of neurologic and gastrointestinal disorders. Noise also appears to weaken concentration and recall ability. It abviously is a negative part of the stress all of us must endure to some, degree. He found that 33 percent of the 2,769 college freshmen he tested registered a hearing loss in the high frequency range. When 1,410 members of the next years fresh-wa- s man class were tested, 61 percent showed similar high frequency losses. Loud noises stimulate the bodys stress response system: pumping up the heart rate and blood pressure, constricting the peripheral blood vessels, and redirecting blood flow away from the skin and digestive organs to the brain and muscles. The body prepares for fight or flight and thats fme jf it has to do either. At any rate, activity should result. Otherwise it is detrimental to the body. Noise may even accelerate degeneration.
