THE U.D.O.T. has recenly denied Levan's request and said the construction should begin within the next six months. Commissioner Max Williams stated that the delay should be no more than a year, and that he felt it was important to the residents of the county that the alternate route be thoroughly considered. In further commission business, Sheriff Robert Painter reported that a meeting has been set for February 27, with all participating agencies, to discuss the Easter weekend at the Sand Dunes. Due to advanced preparation and planning last year, the situation at the Sand Dunes, on Easter weekend was much milder than had been experienced for several previous years. Max Williams Commissioner soon receives as Levan that as reported the old Eureka fire engine, it will be necessary to have a building to house the former engine along with the new one. Levan has also requested that a new fire agreement be signed between Levan City and Juab County when it receives Eureka's engine. a Commissioners approved cooperative agreement with the State Department of Transportation to provide safety signs within the county. The county share of the program is $4,238. In other commission business. Sheriff Painter discussed the contract with Nephi City concerning the use of the jail facilities. He stated that it has been his observation that 60 percent of the phone calls handled through the sheriffs office have been for other agencies, and that the time and money involved in handling business for other agencies must be taken into consideration when the new contracts are negotiated. A meeting has been scheduled with city representatives to discuss the new contract. Sheriff Painter was authorized to work out an agreement with Mr. Kwik's Restaurant in Nephi, for them to supply meals for the jail, since the only response received was from that establishment. Commissioners read a letter from soon as possible. Commissioners received a notice that P.M. Contractors of Salt Lake City, has been awarded the contract to build a pure arch culvert bridge to replace the old wooden bridge over Chicken Creek, two miles east of Levan. According to county road engineer Randy Freston, the engineer's estimate for the project was $40,545. Out of the 10 bids received for the project, P.M. Contractors had the low bid of approximately $35,700. Some 90 percent of the project will be funded by federal agencies and the remaining funds will be provided by the county. The construction company has the permission of the highway department to begin construction as soon as possible, prior to spring runoff. The bridge is designed not to interfere with normal stream flow. County Clerk Loree Memmott reported that $31,700 in Lieu of Tax money had been received by the county. The money was the balance owed the county from last year and has not been earmarked for any special Allan Flanders, representing the Monroe Company, which is contemplating building a cement plant north of Nephi.
