Show 10 ST. GEORGE — For the week of November 14, 2008 Creating art through welding BY BOB HUDSON e Continued from pg. 6 mier was bumped because it couldn't get clearance from the censor’s office, as it displayed a toilet — which at the time was taboo! Now, 40 years later, “The Sopranos’, is considered one of the top-rated shows in TV land. By comparison The Sopranos makes Leave It to Beaver look like a Saturday bhudson@thespectrum.com ST. GEORGE — If you drive along River Road, a little beyond the turn to Little Valley, you'll: pass Andy Lytle’s handiwork. More correctly, you'll pass a couple of pieces of Lytle’s handiwork. Likely a life-sized horse made of horseshoes will catch your eye. It’s just one piece of Lytle’s art, which he has been fashioning out of horseshoes for about 20 years. Another, the family mailbox, stands nearby. It’s much smaller and not quite as eye-catching. “T have a little talent, but| not much; said Lytle, whose dayjob is as operations manager for Dixie Escalante’s lineman department. “I've always had a lot of horseshoes around the NEIGHBORHOODS you CARTER just morning cartoon. — Bob Hudson / St. George Neighborhoods In addition to furniture made of welded horseshoes, Andy Lytle makes animals out of pieces of chain. place, saidLytle,aSt.George native who spent time living in Nevada, Oregon and California before settling in his hometown. “Dad ran racehorses when I was younger. We travelled a lot up until I was 10 or 11” eSee WELDING on pg. 11 In a nutshell, The Sopranos is about a mobster in therapy, his “Family” and all the wacky things that happen to them. It seems that Tony, a 40ish mobster, has inherited a business from his dad. He has a controlling mom, loves his wife Carmela, although he’s had an affair, and has two kids (Not Wally and Beaverish in any way). Poor Tony is depressed and a tad anxious about life, and the show would lead The Spectrum — www.thespectrum.com to believe that Tony is like the guy next door (provided the guy next door is some kind of Mafioso Don). Other friends, relatives, and business acquaintances in the show include: Dr. Melfi (the shrink), Toni’s friend Silvio Dante, a guy nicknamed “Walnuts”, and numerous other characters who spend most of their days at the office killing each other, innocent horses, or anyone else who needs whacked. In the final season after pretty much everyone has been murdered, Tony is reduced to trying to kill several of his associates for relatively minor reasons since pretty much all of the ‘good reasons have already been used. Here is a re-creation of what youd hear in a typical Sopranos episode: @ Tony: Hey, “Silvio”, let’s grab a beer then go out and whack someone. i Silvio: I can’t right now. My friend “Walnuts” is coming over ta whack a guy. @ Tony's Mom: Tony Soprano, you know I don't like you using the term “Whack”. Just wait until I tell your shrink! @ Tony: Yeah, but ma, “Revenge is like serving cold cuts”. TV in the late 50's and early 60's balked at showing a toilet on the small screen — even though it was unoccupied. It wouldn't surprise me today to find an occupied toilet as the main prop in an episode of a Sopranos-type show. In TV’s formative years the most serious conse- quence was “Grounding” — today it’s “Whacking” The only issue-I’m having trouble coming to grips with is this: Is TV to blame for our woes, or is it merely a reflection of our values?
