Show ST. GEORGE www.thespectrum.com — The Spectrum NEIGHBORHOODS For the week of September 19, 2008 Dixie State College has changed a lot over time, and the future is still bright here is an inscription outside the National Archives Building in Washington D.C. that states, “The past is prologue” Whenever I think of the great accomplishments of those who have gone before us in establishing Dixie State College, I think of how true that statement is. The institution has undergone many changes since its establishment in 1911, and what has gone before is prologue to the bright future ead. ahead One of the most obvious changes is the school’s location from downtown St. George to its present site starting on 700 East and bordered by 100 South on the north side and 700 South on the south side. It is hardly confined to these borders, because it also includes, among other locations, the beautiful new Russell C. Taylor Health Sciences Center adjacent to the Dixie Regional Medical Center campus. The state-of-the-art facility will prepare our students in the health sciences with the latest equipment needed to hone their skills and be prepared to deliver excellent health care in their future careers. The building was dedicated at a ceremony on Sept. 12. Another change the col- _ lege has undergone over the years is its name. Through all the changes, the spirit of Dixie has never changed, and is growing in luster as the once junior college is “growing up” into a full-fledged four year, baccalaureate degree awarding institution of higher learning. There is excitement in the air around the campus. There was the First Annual Dixie State College Opening of School Convocation, with beautiful music, encouraging addresses, and a rousing welcome to St. George by Mayor McArthur on its inaugural evening. It was reported to be an inspirational way to begin a new year. Classes are filled to capacity with eager learners. Professors are enthusiastic about the idea of building and encouraging their students to high achievement again this year. Faculty are not resting on their laurels of national recognition in the arts and sciences of this past year, but using them as prologue for new achievement among the students they serve. By the time the school year comes to an end, we will even know what our nickname will be, as every- Some of that excitement comes from the large increase in enrollment we have seen this fall. What isup with that?! (Not thatI would mind owning one of these gas-sipping vehicles, but exasperation and jealousy took over). Finally I made it into class, 20 minutes late, only to find that every seat was taken and all computers . manned leaving three other people with no computer — or place to sit. I sighed and sat on the floor. It would get better. Not every day is a Monday.
