COMPOSTING THE CRAP IN LIFE AND GROWING WITH IT: YOUTH GARDEN PROJECT By Sarah Heffron Due to excess Park Service paperwork, we did not have time this issue to design yet another clever ad... Thank you. The Youth Garden Project (Moab UT.) challenges you to consider a garden phenomena that can’t illuminate an understanding of your own mellow dramas--or not so mellow dramas. Using the garden as metaphor and the therapeutic nature of gardening, YGP is working to enrich education, promote personal growth and cultivate an ethic of caring for the Land, the community and the one’s self amongst youth and the broader community of Grand County. The Garden offers hands-on learning spanning, geography to job skills, math to marketing, history to health, science to social skills, and language to lessons on plain everyday life. For young and old alike it provides a sanctuary for the senses, a place to replenish the soul. It is common ground in which community can take root, grow and sustain itself. The juiciest produce is not mouth-watering melons or tantalizing red tomatoes, sublime though they may be. The juiciest produce is suspended students sneaking back for garden class, children bringing bountiful baskets and bouquets: to limited income elders, lives transforming. One student in the early years wrote: sue Ws i "The work was long and tedious (but) the knowledge, strength and self-awareness that I gained from the project is irreplaceable. My whole perspective of what and whoI wanted to be was changed with the simple act of gardening.” An adult student who was working on her high school diploma at the Garden for a year wrote at the end: “Before I became part of the Garden, I closed everyone and everything out of my life, but now I’ve had the chance to work in our community, my attitude has changed 180 degrees. I have gained a lot of friends, the respect of others and the desire to help whom everI can. -But most of all I’ve gained respect for myself." Not so long ago, every community did garden, and schools dismissed for summer so that youth could get dirty and grow food. One could readily argue-as the state superintendent of California does--that every school (and every community) needs CANOE OUTFITTING SHUTTLE SERVICE JETBOAT TOURS a And the movement of youth gardens and community gardens is growing However, for now, the Youth Garden Project and its diverse offerings remain Working to preserve the agricultural, || scenic, historic and wildlife values ee of Utah’s open land.
