Show A SUMMER RECOLLECTION OF JOLTIN’ JOE: In the summer of 1978, Moabite Bill Koci was enjoying a fine dinner at the famous Gene & Georgette's restaurant in Chicago. Bill looked up from his drink to see the great Joc Dimaggio stroll up to the bar. The Yankee Clipper was in town for a Mr. Coffee convention. Koci figured it was his one chance ina lifetime to get Joe's autograph. Dimaggio nodded and said, "Got a pen?" ® Koci shook his head. The Great Dimaggio shrugged and borrowed a pen from a friend. & "Got anything to write on?” Joe asked. Now Koci was really in trouble. He fumbled through his pockets and came up empty. Joe started to look bored. Finally Koci pulled a $20 bill from his wallet. “Here...sign this.” Dimaggio chuckled and signed the note. Years later. Koci gave the autograph to his friend Rudy Gioguardi who worshipped Joltin’ Joe. “It was the only time.” Koci recalls rucfully “that anyone ever gota free autograph from Dimaggio and it STILL cost twenty bucks.” ' The offensive | newsstand. THE ZEPHYR TO BE BANNED AT CITY MARKET This publication has always found the local City Market staff to be friendly and helpful. But those corporate people in Grand Junction? The Zephyr recently received a flurry of letters from one CAROL CRUZ of the retail services department, She apparently thinks the newsstands in front of the Moab store are an eyesore, and especially ours. We cither get a new stand at a cost of $545 (her number) or we get out. Incredibly she writes, "We want your newspaper racks to look as good as the front of our stores.” Yes indeed. I'd bet the City Market architects must have spent a good thirty seconds coming up with that lovely white cinder block facade. COME ON. City Market. You have GOT to be kidding. According to Ms. Cruz, we have until August 30 to vacate the premises. I called Ms. Cruz and left a message, but she never returned my call. Recently Patty planted a tree—a Colorado Spruce—in memory of Herb at a park in Fallon, Nevada. SEVEN DOGS OF THE MONTH: A two-fer this issue. They unfortunately look more like a Rorshak Test but it’s really Shahshee (L) and Clyde. The larger dog seems fairly benign but the Scottie is fearless. They reside in Bluff with Duke and Sarak Hayduk. |
