Show OPINION Pace 2 - August 6. 2002 Uintah Basin Standard i n fa ? if Standing Up For the Pledge The following words were .spoken by the lute Red Skelton on his television program as he related the story of his teacher. Mr. Laswell, who felt his students had come to think of the Pledge of Allegiance as merely something to recite in class each day. Sow. more than ever, listen to the meaning of these words. I ve been listening to you boys and girls recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester and it seems as though it is becoming monotonous to you. I fl may, may I recite itand try to explain to you the meaning of each word? I, me, an individual, acommittcc of one. Pledge, dedicate all ofmy worldly goods to give without selfpity. Allegiance, my love and my devotion. To the flag, our standard. Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. States, individual communities that have indi united into 48 great states. Forty-eig- vidual communities with pride and dignity and purpose;alldivided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for county. And to the republic, a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern . And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people. For which it stands, one nation, one nation, meaning so blessed by God. Indivisible, incapable ofbeing divided. the right With liberty, which is freedom ofpower to ive one's own life without threats, fear or some sort ofretaliation. And Justice, the principle or quality of deal ing fairly with others. Far all, which means, boys and girls, its as much your country as it is mine. Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country and two words have been added to the pledge ofAllegiance... Under God. Flight crews should be armed now Dear Editor, I notice congress has decided recently to arm a few hundred airline pilots over a two year period. I would like to ask not only why this was not done decades ago, but why only few hundred pilots when there are an estimated 100,000 commercial pilots in this country and tens of thousands of them have petitioned the government directly for their constitutional right to own and bear arms on airliners? If our pilots had been armed in the past the hijackings and the 1 disasters would have been virtually impossible. The position of President Bush and his cronies is reportedly that they want the air crews completely disarmed (thus putting them totally at the mercy of any hijackers on board). The administrations apparent solution is, of course, to simply have our air force fighter jets shoot down Th B. Taxes to the county from those buying and building in the subdivie sion. These are not taxes; these are tax dollars that the county will benefit from for many years. 3. Commerce is also be nefitting from Utah Mini Ranches. Local i and merchants are also feeling the benefits from increased salesi i vices that they are providing to the developer and landowners. The increase in demand for sales and services will also open doors of opportunity to local small business owners to fill the needs that are arising We will probably also see an increase in new businesses opening in the area to fill the needs of consumers that are not presently being met. I challenge the paper to print this letter, to be fair and unbiased by printing views that differ from their own and very few select individuals who are not looking at the whole picture. School officials directed to work with those still receiving immunizations Due to the unique circumstances in the Uintah Basin with the revaccination effort at the Uintah Basin Medical Center, school and health department personnel are directed to work with the children and parents involved to ensure all appropriate immunizations are received However, this should be done in a way that allows these children to receive their education while this specific situation is resolved. As the new school year is approaching, the number of immunizations some children may need repeated may prevent their completion before that time. The child may be conditionally enrolled as allowed by the Utah Immunization Rule for Students. As valid immunizations are received, the childs status will then become adequate for school entry, and the conditional admission status removed. The lifetime immunization record (the yellow card) of the children in question should be accepted aa correct for the present time while any necessary valid immunizations are received. Doses to be repeated should be evaluated in consultation with the with the childs health care provider at Uintah Basin Medical Center. The revaccination effort would only apply to the following immunizations required for school entry in Utah: DTaP, Hepatitis II, Hepatitis A, Hib and Polio (IPV). MMR and Varicella (chickenpox vaccine) will not need to be repeated as they are stored frozen and were not affected in this situation. Patients who received any of the above mentioned immunization(s) Dear Editin', We would like to express my gratitude to members of the Duchesne as it is now proposed.
