Many ofthe anglers contacted dont realize Utah has a statewide (bur-trolimit and theyre keeping too many fish. The new limit went into effect Jan. 1. About 50 percent of the anglers aware Ive contacted this springarent that Utah has a statewide four-trolimit, soys Mike Roach, a Division of Wildlife Resources conservation officer in Salt Lake County. Many of them havent read the 2002 Fishing Proclamation. Itsveiy important that anglers read it so they know the rules and can avoid getting into trouble. We are citing anglers who do not limit, comply with the new four-troRoach says. limit helps lower The four-trothe number of trout taken duringeer-tai- n times of the year, explains Tom Pettengill, sport fisheries coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. This helps spread them out over a longer period oftime and should provide anglers with more consistent fishing through the year. Pettengill says that in 2000, Utahs 500,000 licensed and 700, 000 unlicensed juvenile anglers spent almost 6,9 million days fishing. Thats the highest number of angler days ever recorded in Utah, he says. Our hatch-cr- y sy stem is stockingten million fish each year, but were not capable of Btockingmore.Toprovide anglers with consistent fishing, we need to spread the fish we have out over a longer limit period of time. The four-trowill help us do that, but anglers need to obey the regulation Tor it to work. limit should Havingthe four-troalso make it easier for anglers to know what the limit is. In the past, there have been different trout limits at different waters and anglers who didnt consult the proclamation were confbsed about what the limits were, Pettengill said. Pettengill cautions anglers that a few waters in the state have a trout limit thats lower than four fish, and . he encourages them to consult the 2002 Utah Fishing Proclamation to learn which waters do. The proclamation isavailable from fishingandhunt-inglicens- e agents statewide, the Division of Wildlife Resources internet Web site (www.wildlifb.utah.gov) and Division ofWildlife Resources offices. ut ut i ; CATCH OF THE DAY- - A Con Amore student proudly displays his catch in at the annual Con Amore Fishing Day.
