Corbin, the son of Joe and Thyrrna Burdick, had the doctors baffled for months. Before his birth he had been diagnosed with inter-uterin- e growth retardation and was not developing as expected. Born three weeks premature on July 1 1,2000, and weighingjust 3 the third child lbs., 1 1 ox., Corbin and first son for the Burdicks was small but healthy, and left the hospital after one week. The Worst Day At six months old Corbin's growth started to taper off and his appetite waned. He stayed at 12 lbs. for a very long time, said his mom. He had to be hospitalized on and ofT while fighting pneumonia. Tests showed the youngster had low oxygen levels in his blood but little else that warned ofhis serious condition . He was referred to a pulmonary specialist at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt lake. Two rounds of testing showed nothing wrong, but he continued to lose weight. Even increasing his caloric intake failed to result in any weight gain. USDA Soil Conservationist Nick Lund strom receives reports daily from the National Resource and Conservation Services (NRCS) and distributes them to water users and irrigation companies. Snow water content at each of the 1 7 SNOTEL drainage sites is up from last week. Trial Lake on the Duchesne River drainage was up by 2.4 indies, to stand at 70 percent of the average. Last week Trail Lake was at 64 percent of the average. Lake Fork Basin jumped up by 1.8 inches to stand at 66 percent of average. "I think what's important is how this year compares with last year. At Trial Lake we are 3 inches higher than we were last year. However, at Lake Fork Basin we are 3 inches less than we were last year at this same time. At Brown Duck we're 7 indies less than we were ... and this is all water. At Lake Fork 1 we are 5 indies leas than we were at this time last year. At Five Point we are 6 inches less this year. March is generally one of the wettest months, and we are halfway through it. These are just the facts as to where we are right now. "If we would have been 140 percent of normal in February and 140 percent of normal in March, by April we would have been average, explained Lundstrom. Were still quite a bit below average. As of March 18 the ten SNOTEL sites that affect the Uintah Basin were all between 61percent to 81 percent of the average. The NRCS maintains automated radiotelemetry data sites. The snow we would have been 140 percent of average in February and 140 percent of average in March, by April we would have been average. telemetry (SNOTEL) network consists of approximately 662 remote sites. The NRCS distributes data about the snows water content and stream flow potential almost daily. Water content refers to the amount of water in the snow, it not necessarily related strictly to snow depth, as some snow has more water per inch of snow than other less moist snow. As of late last week, the average snowpack statewide is 70 percent of normal, ranging from 30 percent in southwestern Utah to 84 percent in the Ogden and Weber River watersheds. Forecasts by the Natural Resources Conservation Service show that all major Utah streams will flow well below average. According to Lundstrom, fanners and ranchers often look at the amount of water in inches rather than the percentages. They compare this amount with the two previous years to determine how to manage their lands. Agriculture supply businessesuse the figures to help manage inventory. If there is not much water, they dont stock much seed, Lundstrom explained. By Therena Morrill In a con tinuing series, the Uintah Basin Standard is taking a look at how third grade students from East Elementary in Roosevelt and fifth graders from Roosevelt Middle School performed on their Stanford Achievement Tests taken last September. Both classes earned a complete battery score of 47, with third graders testing highest in word study skills and fifth graders testing highest in science. (See chart accompanying this story.) The scores are median scores, which are found by plotting all scores on a graph, and the score that is exactly in the middle is the median score. Administrators of the Duchesne County School District have historically expressed concern over students failure to master skills within the categories of reading and language. Kevin Heaton, principal at East Elementary, said he is pleased with the approach faculty members are takingin teaching language and reading to students, and anticipates improved scores on future tests. As a school we have worked hard in developing a balanced literacy program within each class, " Heaton said. He explained that they are designing their program around proven practices that have been researched by the National Reading Panel. The reading program consists of phonemicawareness (learning sounds that letters make), phonics instruction, and use of good literature. A crucial part of this program is daily writing instruction and prac-- SAT Results: East Elementary, pared with the Chairman is Roland Uresk, of score, which is always 5Q. Two Months To Live About three weeks later Corbin underwent a fairly new surgical pro- cedure in which gnrtex was inserted into his tiny pulmonary veins in an effort to open them up in order to increase his circulation. The results ofthe surgery didn 't give the Burdicks much hope. When he (the surgeon) came out of the operating room, he sat down and I could just see on his face that it was bad. He said when they sedated him they actually lost him, but brought him back, Thyrena related. He said that out of the four veins there was only a pinhole opening in one vein. A follow-u- p examination three months later showed Corbins disease was progressing rapidly; three of the four veins in which the gnrtex had been implanted, had already collapsed. They gave him two months to one year to live, and the year was very, very optimistic, said Thyrena. The Burdicks found themselves with just one option, and they took it. percent.
