Show tmU IWi y 1 2001- - UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. December 4. Before me bn my desk, as I write today, stands an unusual snow globe. Ita base is rather substantial, includ-- ; ing within it a musical mechanism that plays an aria from La Boehme. The base features in one view the stage of the Metropolitan Opera hall complete with the golden curtains drawn back to display, a rotation of scenes from famous productions, including the opera from which the aria was drawn. To the sides of the stage are boxes lilted with opera goers. The base also includes, as I turn it around, murals by Marc Chagall and a dazzling sunburst also displayed in the auditorium. In the snow globe itself is a Manhattan landscape featuring tall build-ingincluding the Empire State Building and the Flat Iron. The Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty are in the foreground from one view. Towering over all these from whichever view we contemplate the scene are the twin towers of the World Trade Center, unblemished. Captured in this little art object is a panorama that has been forever altered. It represents a landscape in our minds that will never be quite the same again.
