By Susan Collier Altliough the ladies still wear coming pink smocks, it iB not the Pink Lad ics" anymore. It is the Utah Basin Medical Center Volunteers. And they need more. If you are harking for an activity to enrich your life this may be the purfect opportunity, ' whether yuu are mule or female. Currently there are approximately 40 volunteers including two men, George Landry and Bob Sly. The volunteers range in age from 15 to 80. When asked if they need more volunteers, Helen I lull, president of UBMC Volunteers, responded, Oh yes, we need them bad! Volunteering at UBMC is appealing because of the vuriely of opxirtu-nitie- s uvailahlc to those willing to donate their time. Some answer phones and questions at the front desk, some work in the hospital gift shop, others deliver (lowers or Till the pop muchines, and still others help the nurses on the floor. Some, like Connie Neal, a Certified Nurses Assistant, uses tier credentials to work medical surgery floor. In fuel it was Connie who got tier mother, Helen Hall, started ar, a volunteer about five or six years ago. Connie put Helen's name in as a volunteer and they called Helen the next duy. She has been u volunteer ever since and president of the Voliinl ers for a year and a half. Helen says, I love it. It enriches my life. I look forward In get to know the people ami problems " The Volunteers use nil their proceeds from the gift shop and other fund raisers like the recent hook sale to benefit the hospital. In the past they have bought a $14,000 breathing device for the nursery. They hImi use the money to help miiintenanre and the kitchen. The Volunteers try to use part of the money to liilliil wishes that each department is allowed to submit to the Volunteers. The Volunteers also support various charities such as Toys for Tots, mid they sponsor medical scholarships Besides tersonal enrichment the Volunteers are ottered several benefits, such as free lunch and access to physical therapy. Some receive free mammograms and free EKGs prior to surgeries. Mnny volunteers work one day a week for four hours. However, some like George Landry, who lias volunteered for a little over a year, works two days a week, typicully at the front desk. George says, "Its very interesting.
