Dr. Buxton and his wife, Diane, are serving a mission in the South Pacific. During World War II I learned of Pacific names such as Tarawa, Solomon Islands, Guadel Canal, New Guinea, Guam, Saipan and Okinawa as I followed the war of the Pacific with my father, a World War I Veteran. I often thought of these places and eryoyed photographs of the beautiful Pacific Islands. It seems incredible I have now walked on many of them. Our most recent missionary work took us through the Fiji mission which includes the many islands comprising the nations of Fiji and Vanuatu and also the larger island ofNew Caledonia. In addition to our usual assignment of zone conferences with teaching and treating missionaries and gathering information about hospi- tals, doctors, and pharmacies, we were asked by our Area President to evaluate some of the smaller islands of the Vanuatu Islands (New Hebrides) for feasability of missionaries serving there. Naturally we were given some rather wild information about what to expect. Despite concerns about perhaps becoming the menu for lunch we were anxious for the experience. Friends from Home The visit began in Fjj i. The mission the largest city and national capital. It is located on the east side of Vitu Levu, the largest of the islands, and is where the Fiji Temple is located. It was wintertime. The weather was drier and cooler. It was nice to get away from cold New Zealand during a colder than usual winter. Weather duringthe tour was office in Suva, nicely warm but still rained about daily. The wet season must be awfully wet. In Suva we met, visited, dined, and attended the temple with temple missionaries. Elder Dun and Sister Ruth Walker from Vernal. We had served with them in our Vernal Temple. Rendezvousing with folks from back home is a great experience. Not too long ago we met Scott and Carma Hirschi, and Lynn and Renee Miller in Hamilton, New Zealand and attended the temple with them. Ironically, we three couples are all from Cove Ward of the Roosevelt West Stake. Touring Islands & Hospitals There is much unrest in Fiji but we did not encounter posted armed soldiers as we did when visiting there in January. It seems the unrest is caused distribution and use of supplies is impeded by poor government follow through. This becomes a real problem as it must be distributed to the smaller island hospitals. The Red Cross has been good to help as have other charitable groups and church members. Most of the islands of Fjji and Vanuatu are volcanic in origin. In Vanuatu there are several active volcanoes. One blew earlier this year causing problems for the natives. Hurricanes come through and blow away the coconuts, fruits, birds and abouteveiythingthat is not tied down. ThiB causes much hunger. Its at these times emergency food supplies are much appreciated. The islands are tropical and covered with thick trees, shrubs, and vines all over unless there is a dry side where open ridges can be spotted, especially in Fyi. Roads are mere caterpillar trails in the jungle kept open with some vehicular travel. Taxis are old ratty pickups, mainly without a canopy on back. The bed feels good after bouncingaround in one of them all day. Visiting the Missionaries Our first wild excursion was to the island of Rabi (pronounced Rambi in Fyian.) Our boat trip was to be 30 minutes each way. The new boat was Dr. John Blake was raised in Roosevelt and NEW DERMATOLOGIST down.
