Show Pace 2 - September OPINION 19. 2000 Uintah Basin Standard A Different Get Out and Vote ft Message Ok, here it is, the obligatory get out and vote message: Get out and vote. Today is it Oh bother, it may be good that someof you dont vote. If you haven't kept up on issues and candidate stands on them, it's ok to stay home. Really. This isn't the time to have results dictated by a whim. The whole picture is a bit more important than that So really, if you don't know, dont go. Of course, most of us won't be voting for our view of the perfect candidate. In some instances it will be more a matter of w ho we don't want in office rather than who we do. That is the nature of the political process. Compromise is evident in every aspect of what goes on, from election to legislation. While some get frustrated by that point, it may very well be the strength of the system. It is very EDITOR'S NOTE: The Uintah Basin Standard welcomes and encourages opinions from readers in the form of letters to the editor. Doc and Diane. Sincerely, ballots, life will go on. And this year, as in years past, there will be one burning question left unanswered by all the candidates, one question too tough for any of them to take on, a question that won't be answered for weeks, maybe months after the election: Who the heck is supposed to clean upall these signs? can do, and state and local governments should not do what individuals can do tor themselves. 3) Laws that take over our personal' responsibilities, intrude on private lives or affect our property without just compensation are not Constitutionally justified. 4 ) The Constit ut ion should not be stretched or (those who do this call it a living Constitution) but be defined as originally intended by the Founding Fathers. When considering a law or candidate, ask: Will our freedom to act be preserved, or be relegated to some agency or official? Will the right to private ownership of property or means of production be infringed? Will government be limited, or its role expanded beyond Constitutional boundaries? Is persuasion exercised, rather than compulsion? Are we electing moral leaders of principle, judgement and integrity who understand the proper role of government? Do you understand it? And the clincher. This country waa founded on concepts derived from J religion from the Ten Commandments and other scriptures. A society based on such standards is the only kind that provides . freedom, even to the unbeUpving (compare with Pakistan, China, etc.). Therefore, ask: la there consistency with principles based in traditional theistic religion, or reliance on atheism involving relative values and more government power? As government continues to encroach on our liberties, we need leaders who, wven though not personally religious, believe in the basic principles ofliberty. Otherwise, we'll soon find ourselves struggling under socialism or worse. Sincerely, Ruth Lehenbauer Scott Edrington and family We need leaders who believe basic principles of liberty Dear Editor, America in neither a socialist republic nor a communist dictatorship; it is a Constitutional Republic. Voters should check their candidates in regard to correct principles of American government: 1) If the private sector can do it, government should not. Ifcharity can do it, government should not. 2) Federal government should not do what state and local governments Th education, no barking dogs, increasing employment, all the clev erly thought out catch phrases, the millions spent on advertising, thousands of hours of work, and the counting of udao-Christi- an to. I have recently been contacted by law enforcement officials from throughout the stste who object to Mark ShurtlefTs recent ad campaign featuring Sheriff Aaron Kennard. Sheriff Kennard claims that Sheriff's and Police Chiefs from throughout the state support Shurtleff, suggesting that a majority or even all of chiefs and sheriffs take this position. As president ofour Association, I assure you that our Association voted unanimously not to support either candidate because we wished to remain in a neutral position to enable our association to work closely with either candidate after Uintah Basin Standard Inc. 646-90Periodical postage pud a Roowvdl aid Duchesne. They evidently enjoy the work, which among them is considered a privilege rather than a job. In the past, the inmates have donated a fair portion of their small monthly wage to Sub For Santa in the spirit of Christmas giving, and to contribute to the society from which they are barred . Fortheir efforts and generosity, we express our acknowledgment and gratitude. Thanks guys! Cash donations to buy the hundred and one small items that go with projects of this kind is needed the most and would be greatly appreciated. Im having trouble understanding why my taxes are adjusted every year since we bought and refurbished our home, when those who are doing the assessing of our property have had little or no change in their taxes for the last five or six years. When does the assessors office employees property get reassessed? The assessors are the employees of Duchesne County and should pay property tax just like the rest of us. We understand about different areas being reassessed every five years. Were for fair and honest taxes with everyone being taxed on the aame principal, and not some 10 percent and some 100 percent. Impressive and are the world that come to mind in describing what 1 was privileged to tee there. While it is a secured facility, the inmates moved about freely in different areas of several work shops. Inone of the shops there were beautifully crafted wooden items such a jewelry boxes with roses sculpted on the lids, a child size front porch swing on a frame, a toy boa bench, bookshelves with a storage drawer and other project in various stages of completion. One young man had carved a toy trailer hitch pickup truck with camper and was busy painting it when we paused through his ares. In the same room there were Forest Service signs that had been restored or were in the process of restoration. In another part of the shop, the mmatea were repairing and painting used bicycles ofall sizes. There was a small and a wonderful peddle child's sled that had been completely condition. restored to like-neThe materials for most of the projects are made from donated maj. often wit h flaws or from wooden pallets that have been taken apart and Go-Ca- rt I I Curb or Chert I appreciate his leadership aiidlknow what he has done to improve law enforcement in our state. (I'SPS I I I I I the election. , Dear Editor, 1 had s nightmare the other night. I dreamed that both Hilly and Albert won their offices by the vote of the people. I saw Billy and Hilly (lying from their home town in New York to the White House in D.C. (paid by the taxpayers) They slept in the Lincoln bedroom free of charge. Billy worked in the oval office for a half a day lining out what Albert was to do that afternoon. Then in the afternoon Billy went over to Hilly's office to line out a national health program he had reinvented. While Billy waa in the oval office in the morning, Albert was in the Vice pres, office making phone calls to Chins, labor unions, Buddha's temples etc. starting to raise money for his in four years. In the afternoon he would sit in the oval officeand inform the press and media what the bottom line was to be on news etc. Meanwhile Joseph (Lieberman) was in the Mideast seeing how much money it would cost us to have peace in the mid-eas- t, while he is in office. I awoke in a cold sweat and this thought flashed through my mind again. In God I trust, not Hilly, Billy, Albert, Eddie. Tommy, Diane, Ridiy Charley the list goes on and on and on and on on Gordon S. Johnson The youngest teams were listed as However there being for grades were players from grades K-- This was too wide of a size and age span. The city must stick to their agb' grade restrictions. Rather than make exceptions they should expand and create K-- l teams. Also, many people said that Roosevelt ought to affiliate with the ASL (American Soccer League). This would mean we would have a spring and fall season, and also a tournament. The coaches (and I am included among these) complained that there was imxedibly poor communication and support. A clinic to train coaches would greatly improve the quality of the program and perhaps gneourage more parents to get involved. I am not writing this to single out the person over the soccer program specifically. From what I understand, that person was also running another dty league program at the same time, and the soccer seems to have been a last minute effort. My complaint ia that this is how the soccer program is always nin. Except when Gale Fauci was over it, the program has been utterly chaotic. To parents, I must say that part of the problem is getting the coaches needed to run the program If we want better aoccerprugramwemurt be willing to train and coach. We must show the dty that there is sufficient parent support and interest to demand their attention. To the city, I would remind you that while parents volunteer tocoach, you are being paid to serve us. The soccer program continues togroweach year, this can increase the financial reward to the dty for their efforts. However, if the dty continues to be indifferent and haphazard in their program there are other options. The Vernal league, which is affiliated with the ASL, has told individuals that Roosevelt could organize its own 1-- 2. 3. teams and participated! their league. Or individuals could organize anJ run the program privately. Obviously we would prefer not to do this, what weaskisforthecitytobeginplanning the soccer program earlier so that it can be better organized. This issue is on the agenda to be discussed at the City Council meeting on Nov. 14 at 5.45 p m. Anyone interested in showing their support is invited to attend at the dty building on State Street. Many expressed a strongfeehngthat now that soccer is played at the high school level the community needs to strengthen the soccer program. There was great enthusiasm for a soccer clinic for players. Many also wished that there would be better training provided for the referees. There were many complaints about the poor scheduling. They felt the season started too Tate, there wasn't enough time for practices before the games began, the younger children bad too many late games, and the schedules passed out were confusing and inaccurate. The communication to correct schedule errors was either nonexistent or extremely poor. Carol Rasmussen-Diabete- s TriCounty Health will be giving flu shots, glucose, cholesterol, blued pressure.
