"I thought that would give me information. Because I knew nothing about the disease. Id heard awful things about chemotherapy and losing all your. hair. I'd had a friend who really suffered from the surgery and the radiation. After I got through the panic, I waa just plain scared to death. And I wanted to know everything I could.1 The initial reaction for a newly diagnosed cancer patient and family is shock and denial, in widely wmryr-in- g degrees. Eventually the patient and family move through the grieving process, suffering besides the shock and denial, a sense of loss, anger and resentment, depression and hopelessness, bargaining, and finally, some measure of acceptance for the new reality of their lives. The main strength that enables survivors to cope with their condition and treatment through all these phases is a sense of hope in the face of the daily and long term uncertainty. Hope comes from many sources beginning with the attitude of medical care givers. Next, the family must rallyto the patient's support and . jsrork as a team to develop a family Roll Cell Vote: All Commissioners Aye Donation to Con Amoro 6th Annual Fishing Day Tho Commission reviewed tho request received in last weeks meeti- ngMotion: Commissioner Happen motioned that due to the benefits to tho County and its residents which are students are Duchesne County residents, many of tho volunteer! ere Duchesne County residents, if successful on the long term, many of the Con Amors students will be given the opportunity to become gainfully employed. As this happens, the patient and family are usually intensely seeking more information about the diagnosis and treatment options. And aa they reach out for information, they may be lucky enough to contact tho next source of hope: community re-sources and support. As Bette emphasized in our inter- view, this community awareness and support for tha cancer patient and family ia a vital to help them cope with demands of treatment, the di o- pression and hopelessness. Bette says when tha family and community supports are there for the patient, tha provide an essential element of healing. " I believe communities who provide cancer rallying events and have services such as Reach for Recovery and patient support group are truly healing communities. It makes such difference in your strength and determination to fight tha disease, to stay confident about your life. I know it did for me. I hope everyone in the Uintah Basin will understand how much their knowledge and help mean to those women and families who an now where I waa ten years ago."
