Show Pape 14 - January 25. EDUCATION 20QQ Uintah Basin Standard Tabiona students to perform in chorus By Cheryl Meeham A few years ago music programs in Duchesne Counly withered away with spending cuts, but now voted leeway tax monies are breathing life back into music programs and Tabiona School students are benefiting with a new school chorus program. When 9th and 11th grade students come into their 7th period choral class they appear relaxed and cheerful. Students take up chairs, four or five to a row. After the final bell rings Julie Turn bow stands and conducts a few rounds of voice exercises. Julie Gils in on occasion for her husband Reed who is the choir teacher. A practice song performed by the high school choir is lighthearted and has a folk art kind of sound o it. All types of songs are performed by the group Julie says, chosen through sample music on tapes and CD's. The high school chorus group is practicing for a solo and ensemble regional competition coming up this March in Green River. Utah. For most, it is the first time they will perform in competition. Julie says - -- about a dozen different songs will be performed at competition. We'll have ten through 12groups and soloists who w ill each have their own number. Julie said, adding, they're pretty much a new group this year. Later in May the group will again perform, but as a whole choir, during the district fine arts competition. For younger students Tabiona alsooffers an elementary chorus year round and one quarter of chorus for 7th and 8th graders. Tabiona School's choir demonstrates their skills each year during the Christmas season when chord students present a concert open to the community. Things are going well, Reed says. The group is interested in collecting used black tuxedos for choir costumes. Wed like everyone to have one, but theyre hard to find, Reed said. So, while the call goes out for folks to search their old trunks and closets for used tuxedos, Tabiona students will keep on singing and preparing for competition.
