Not so. Actually the earliest sunset occurred in early December while, the latest sunrise did not occur until the 5th of January. Many are surprised to learn that we in the northern hemisphere are closest to the sun when its coldest outside. But it is true. January 2, 2000 had us as close to the sun as we're going to git on this orbit at 147,103,000 km. The northern hemisphere will be furthest from the sun on July 3, 2000 at 152.102JD00 km out. So why are our temperatures coldest when we're actually closest on and hottest when furthest from the sun? Our temperatures are affected much more by the tilt of the Earth rather than the relatively small changes in distance. During winter months we are tilted away from the sun. This has the sun much lower in the sky and therefore its actually in the aky for much less time than in the summer when it's up a lot higher. Submitted by Patrick Wiggins.
