Roosevelt, also, had five second place wrestlers in Garrett Cloward, 65; Josh Liddell, 70; Cody Burdett, 116; Morgan Woods, 120; Steven Harmston, 195. That seems evident now by virtue of her being able to make a living from her work and still maintain her enjoyment of what she does. Unlike the highly glazed varieties we see adorning most craft and art shops, the Baku method produces mostly matte finished surfaces upon which Ronda also often paints petroglyph figures for decoration. Ordering three tons of daysand mixture at a time, Ronda can stay busy for about six months. What I saw was impressive. Her electric kiln was packed full of pieces ready to be fired and nearby was a d rack with more pieces ready to go. The first firing is called the bisque fire and depending upon the multi-shelve- -- difter-en- t temperatures and times for maturing the piece to their proper strength. Rondas normal bisque firings are what is called a cons 06 or about 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. At this temperature her low fire glazea painted on the pieces will stand out as black figures against the pottery colored background. After 8 hours in the kiln (also depending upon the type of day and temperatures reached) she removes the pieces and prepares them for the primitive fire outside. Using aa many as five kilns full of pieces at a time Ronda prepares an area outside with a reduction material such aa sawdust, sometimes adding straw or animal dung for texture and color, and begins layering the pieces from the kiln on top. These are placed at random in different positions so that not all the black from the reduction material will appear in the same place on each piece. The reduction material is important in that it forms a layer beneath the pots so they are not touching the dirt where there is moisture and also because under fire it takes the oxygen out of the surrounding air and deposits the resulting carbon on and even into the pottery pieces the black on the pots. Often shall rub or sprinkle copper dust over the pieces to produce the reds and browns also common on these pieces. After this comes a layer of wood, usually trash wood from a sawmill or someones old barn, which is ignited at both ends of the pit and allowed to burn completely across the pottery underneath. The firing time itself is usually only 2 hours but by the time til fire has bunted down and shes able to retrieve the pieces, the total elapsed time is closer to hours. This fortunately is not a critical timed event but it does require a feeling for how hot the fire needs to be to properly cure the minerals and keep the pieces from cracking. During the summer wh, n the evening temperatures don't drop as rapidly as in the colder months this retrieval process can be more casual. The more rapid the temperature drop when removing the pots the more likelihood there is ofbreak-a- g and cracking 6-- Living in an area rich with historic petroglyphs and having a feel for what sells makes the choice of these figures an ideal decoration for Rondas pottery. By using them often she hopes to subtly help the buying public become aware of their significance and value with respect to the history of the area. When asked what one statement she would like to pan on to others, Ronda said that, "anyone can become proficient at pottery making if they work at it and keep practicing. From hobby to livelihood working with natural earth products has given Ronda Clark a creative outlet for her energies as an artist As a member of the Blue Mountain Artists aha brings a unique perspective to the growing group as well as her obvious talents. If you would like to meet Ronda and other members of the Blue Mountain Artists, our next meeting will be in Roosevelt on Wednesday, 17 February at the Moon Lake Electric Building. The meeting will begin with business at 5:30 and then there will be a abort sketching section, the visual basis for all forms of art.
