In case of oversite, all friends and family are invited to attend. 7-- The Utah Commission on Volunteers is offering free community literacy teams trainings at regional locations throughout the state, as an effort of the Utah' Promise initiative. The initiative, announced at the Volunteer Summit in October by Ret General Colin Powell, is a charge to give Utah children a caring adult, safe place, healthy start, marketable skills and an opportunity to serve others. The training will be offered throughout Utah, and will focus on a team approach to implementation of strategies for a community-wid- e literacy and tutoring efforts. All literacy programs and stakeholders are invited to attend. We hope to train teams of literacy stakeholders from communities throughout Utah said Michael Call, executive director of the Commission on Volunteers. The end result of these trainings will be comprehensive, strategic, communitywide literacy plans To prepare for the regional trainings, regional trainers met with educators and literacy providers in conjunction with the Bank Street College ofEducation located in New York. Participants were taught reading comprehension, English language learning, making and using games to support skills teaching, along with implementation strategies, planning and team building for trainers. Photographers from the Roosevelt area, particularly beginners, are welcome to try to win their share ofover 1 ,300 prizes. The deadline for the contest is Feb. 28. The Mrs. Utah Pageant is an exciting and rewarding program that recognises Utah's married woman and ia the official state preliminary to the prestigious Mrs. America Pageant According to Tana Herrington and Diane Ritter, Executive Directors, "We have had a full-colo- black-and-whi- te number of conteatants from Roosevelt participate in the past, but as of today we are still looking for a representative. Completed applications are due no later than March 1, 1999. According to Herrington, the Mrs. America program has only one purpose: to celebrate the beauty of Americas married women. "Mrs. America contestants do not necessarily fit any particular mold. Our participants represent an incredible variety (backgrounds, lifestyles and personal interests. Conteatants range in age from 23 to 72 years. Many of our contestants have children, others do not Our reigning Mrs. Utah has four children! "They enter the pageant to fulfill goals" says Ritter' and maybe a few dreams along the way. The proceedings include evening gown, swimsuit and interview competitions. The two day event, boated at the Salt Lake City Marriott Hotel will take place June 24 and 25. The January Utah history lesson waa on the Pioneers of Sanpete County , given by lin Floyd. The parallels between the lifestyle of the early pioneers and our modern lifestyle were discussed. Gail Allred then talked about the values of obituaries and cemetery atones as related to family history and genealogy. The December meeting at DUP was also held at the Crossroads Community Center on Dec. 7. At that time, Lin Floyd gave the second installment of the 'White Indian Boy, followed by a reading by Joyce Bolton, camp captain. The International Library of Photography is an organization dedicated to bringing the work of amateur photographers to the public's attention. Members are needed for the Uintah Community Chorale Following the lead of other culturally aware communities, many citizens in the Uintah Basin have long desired a permanent choral group comprised of members from Altamont on the west to Rangely on the east. This dream is about to become a reality with the formation ofthe new Uintah Community Chorale. Carla Cleavinger, well-know- n local musician, accompanist, teacher and music educator will be the directorfoonductor. Her combination of enthusiasm, dedication, experience and expertise will be sure to make the new Uintah Community Chorale a delightful experience for those who sing in the group as well as its audiences. The choir will feature a full complement of soprano, alto, tenor and baas voice. The Chorale's first concert will be in conjunction with the Uintah Community Band and will be performed on Sunday, March 21' at 7 p.m. in the Vernal Middle School auditorium and on Sunday, March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Union High auditorium.
