Porter revered his father, who taught him to work hard, cherish family members and thank God for His blessings. As Porter grew up be saw the town of Myton grow and prosper. "Piesi dentSmart wrote to our Senator Reed Smoot for money forabridge. When it was installed people came from all over the Uintah Basin, even Denver. A few congressman came. It was called Bridge Day. There was a three-da- y celebration in Myton.". Porter figures he was about ten at the time. "I was left in Bluebell to water the chickens and feed the livestock for everybody who went to town. All day long I felt like a king riding around on my pony. That night when the coyotes started to howl, I wished I was in Myton!" Myton was quite the town. Porter said, "It had cement sidewalks, a marshal, stores, two banks, two newsthe papers, a barber and a hotel works. It rivaled VernaL" Troublecame when Mormon leader. President William H. Smart, approached the city about building a stake center. According to Porter, be was turned down flat Thus, the stake center was erected in Roosevelt As he grew. Porter discovered a great love Car music and song and developed a lovely tenor voice. His enthusiasm for music was discovered by church leaders and he was asked to lead his ward choir. After choir practice one foy PWters his eyes fell upon Fern Arson. "She was a little lady from Bluebell. She acted Ukt she liked to be around me so we got married," Porter recalls. I have tried to analyse the reason for this dilemma for many year end I must confees that I am still unsure my conclusions are reasonable. First, are public officials obligated to be public minded? By public minded, I mean being truly responsive to the will and mind of tha citizens. There is a lot of gray area here, as one may imagine. A fine line exists for policy making between a supposed knowledgeable elected official and an oftentimes ignorant, passionate, and public. Secondly, can it be assumed that the public caret about politics only when an issue directly affects their Uvea? How often do citizens attend the regular Monday afternoon county commission meetings or the Tuesday evening Roosevelt city council meetings? Or better yet, check the election voterturnout in an or the bi yearly election of county party officials. Exactly why is the public characterised by an uninvolved and apathetic citizenry? I do not beUeva that most people can ba rightfully accused of uninvolvement or apathy because they may not run for tat and federal offices. The reality of campaign costa art absolutely prohibitive. However, how often do civic minded citizens on the local level seek to run for office or offer to serve on local community boards only to learn that there are "ways we do things here," or that om must pay his or her dues or ba the kind of person who may rock the boat These attitudes perpetuate a buddy system that is difficult at beet to surmount and provide yet another reason to be uninvolred and apathetic. The law elates that unrestricted land owned in fee by an individual Indian or tribe may be conveyed into trust statu. When the land is located on the reservation, s written request to have lands taken in trust is sent to the Secretary of Interior, who will subsequently notify the state and local governments having regulatory jurisdiction that each will be given 30 days in which By Lorna Stradinger the temptation for public officials to edness.
