Winter recreationists mean greater stress on Wildlife Increasing snow depths and falling temperatures mean outdoor recreational opportunities for Utahna. This holiday season finds thousands ofUtah residents and visitors heading to the hills to eiyoy everything from downhill and skiing to ice fishing and snowmobiling. Winter also offers unique opportunities to enjoy Utah's resident wildlife. Although watching wildlife in winter can be extremely rewarding, if practiced inappropriately, it can be costly to wildlife. Winter in Utah also is crunch time for many apecies of wildlife. With the onset of winter, wildlife are forced to change their habits and behavior if they are to survive. Some wildlife forsake their temperate summer homes for warmer climates and better conditions. Many ofthese winter migrants may travel thousands ofmiles; others, like mule deer and elk, may move just a few miles from higher elevation summer ranges to lower winter ranges. For resident species auch as mule deer, winter survival hinges on maintaining a positive energy balance since many of their preferred foods are now unavailable. Mule deer, like many other wildlife species, are capable of adjusting their metabolism and activity patterns to conserve precious winter energy reserves. When winter conditions deteriorate, these animals will bed and wait until conditions improve before venturing out again to search cross-count- ATTEST: Pat Barker, for food. Duchesne County Clerk. Unlike what most people believe, wildlife are actually more disturbed by people on foot than by snowmobiles and other vehicular traffic. Research conducted in Yellowstone National Park found that crosscountry skiers disturbed elk as much as road construction and logging. Every time skiers disturbed the animals, they expended up to 6 percent of their average daily energy expenditure fleeing the sites. Similar results were reported in Colorado for mule in response to people afoot. Mule deer disturbed by people walking moved farther and longer, and expended more energy, than deer disturbed by snowmobiles. It needs to be pointed out that these results were obtained from studies conducted along established trails and not under situations where people on snowmobiles actively chased the deer. These studies point out that human winter recreational activities can have significant impacts on wildlife, particularly if the recreation occurs on winter ranges. Increased wildlife disturbance on winter ranges can increase wildlife mortality to predation, highway accidents, and weather conditions, if the disturbance forces the animals to use habitats. These effects of human recreation on wintering wildlife can be minimized ifrecreationists restrict their activities to designated areas. If winter recreation activities include dogs, these animals should be leashed or restrained to keep them from chasing wildlife. Activities that cause undue disturbance ofwildlife can be considered harassment. The Utah Code states that people may not harass or permit dog i to harass protected wildlife. Wild! fe harassment may take many for is and can be intentional or unintc itional. Chasing wildlife wit i vehicles, snowmobiles, or ATVs if nnsidered intentional harassment ind is illegal. Unintentional h rassment might simply be a photographer trying to get in for a close shot. While not punishable by law, it can be just as costly to wildlife. In addition to restricting your recreation to designated areas, you can use binoculars and spotting scopes to eqjqy wildlife at a distance thus helping to minimize the impact of your activities on wildlife. If you see someone harassing wildlife, get a good description and a license plate number and call the Utah Division ofWildlife Resources poachers hotline at Uintah Basin STANDARD' 1800427-8679- " BUSINESS.
