December 1. 1998-- Big Gains Made in Retail Sales Page 1 1 Sales in Basin at end of 1997 grew by healthy margins Duchesne Countys gross taxable sales for the fourth quarter 1997 (the latest figures available) grew by a healthy 29 percent over the same period in 1996. The figures are $29 million in 1996 to just over $37 million in 1997. Mining grew by 11 percent in the period, from $1.6 million to $1.6 million. Construction, although showing rapid growth in first quarter 1998, actually lost 19 percentage points in sales from fourth quarter 1996 to 1997. The figures for 1996 are $429, dOO compared to $348,000 for 1997. Manufacturing went up by 89 percent from $713,000 to $1.3 million. Transportation figures for fourth quarter 1996 were missing so no comparisons could be drawn, but 1997 brought in $77,000 gross taxable transportation sales. Communications was an industry on a downward trend, from $1.95 million to $1.73. Electric and gas had some upward movement from $2.2 million to $2.5 million, a year-ove- r gain. Total wholesale gross taxable sales jumped a notable 63 percent, from $2.4 million to $3.3 million. Retail gross taxable sales in Duchesne County also had a positive movement, from $15 million to over $17 million, a rise. The Uintah Community Band will present Sunday evening concerts filled with Christmas favorites for the whole family. The band, which performed summer concerts in Vernal and Roosevelt, has continued to grow in number and now exceeds 60 members from throughout the Basin. It is comprised ofvolunteer musicians ranging in age from 11 to 78 years old and hailing from Rangely, Roosevelt and Vernal. Private motor vehicle sales grew from $944,000 fourth quarter 1996 to $ 1.1 million in fourth quarter 1997, a rise. Uintah County had gross taxable sales for the fourth quarter of 1997 ( the latest figures available) of $85 million compared to $66 million the fourth quarter of 1996. This is a growth of 19 percent.
