We had stopped the car on a whim, and trudged through a grassy field to touch a piece of the past. In awe we ran our fingers over the mud chinking that had been pressed between the worn logs. We peered inside the door way. I tried to conjure up images ofa long skirted women busy around the cook stove. I bet someone raised a dozen kids in here, I said as we left the structure that could have fit com- fortably inside the walls of my living room. We discussed the hardships that must have accompanied their lives. As wc walked back to the car my friends head jerked up. She looked at me, her eyes shining. Wait a minute. They didnt have indoor plumbing! Theres your an- swer!" I rolled her words around in my mind. Finally I understood. Yah, youre right!" For all of their trials our forefathers never had to put up with a line at the bathroom door. Oh, how peaceful must have been their tiny cabins never having to hear, Hey! How long are you going to be in there? Pioneer outhouses were usually quite a trek from the back door, and those who grew impatient waiting could certainly run to nearby brush. In the wintertime I doubt the little stall would have been occupied for over 60 seconds. To me the true mark ofa civilized world is not the miracle of space travel it is the reality of two bathrooms in every household. Construction of our second bathroom is near completion. I kick off my shoes and ease down into the new gleaming bathtub that fills the tiny room. It has just the right slope to its back, I know I tried out several to find the perfect fit, much to the amusement of fellow shoppers. Ahhh ... I wait in breathless anticipation for the day I can turn on the faucets and fill it with steamy fragrant bath water. Oh, how I have dreamed of uninterrupted tubby tim- e- in a house filled with boys who drink much too much water and perform what sounds like "Lord ofthe Dance" routines in the hall. On the day I close the bathroom door behind me and know it wont-opeuntil Im good and ready to open it, paradise will finally be mine! Area's gf AccgmpUshmgnL New Direction for Proper Growth.
