The Bureau ofLand Management would like to remind the public of a couple of tips to have a safe holiday. Fireworks are a large part ofthe holiday, but they must be used with care. Remember that igniting fireworks on any public land is illegal, and use extra care if you are near public lands. If you are camping during the holiday weekend, make sure your campfire is completely out when you leave and never leave a campfire unattended. The grass may be green, but a careless match and a little wind could turn the land black. There are also large amounts oflast year's dried grasses that make the land even more susceptible to fire. . Have a fun and safe holiday but remember that only you can prevent wildfires. Legislation sponsored by Sen. privatizing town of Dutch the federally-ru- n John, near the Flaming Gorge Dam and Recreation Area, was cleared by the Senate Energy Committee, bringing settlement on the town one step closer to completion and eventually saving millions in taxpayer funds. The time has arrived to transfer the ownership and maintenance of this town to local hands, said Bennett who introduced the Dutch John Privatization Act last year. Keeping Dutch John federally owned is not only a tremendous burden on federal funds, but a heavy restriction to citizens living there. This town is an anachronism, and an expensive one at that, and I am pleased to see my colleagues support our efforts, The Dutch John Privatization Actof 1997 will provide forthe transfer of selected federal property into private ownership, dispose of several residential units, public building and facilities and provide for a transition to local government administration to reduce existing long term federal expenditures The bill also creates an annual grant over 15 years to Daggett County from public power revenues, offsetting costs iff transition while a community tax base is created. As part of a settlement with two 1958 by the Bureau of Reclamation to house personnel and equipment during the construction ofthe Flaming Gorge Dam and Reservoir, housing over 2,000 people at the time. The town continues to serve as a residence for approximately 175 people, including federal government employees and others associated with the Flaming Gorge Dam and Recreation Area. Because the town has remained federally owned and due to rising costs, the Bureau of Reclamation and the UJS. Forest Service spend nearly $1 million annually running community facilities and services. Provisionsin the Act would transfer approximately 2,400 acres ofland no longer necessary for agency functions out offederal ownership. Residents of Dutch John will have the opportunity to purchase homes they currently rent from the Bureau iff Reclamation at fair market value. After transfer of ownership, a local government will provide basic community services, audi aa roads, water, and sewer, presently provided and paid for by the federal environmental groups, UDOTmust maintain an buffer zone between the river and U.S. 189 and remove anything built too dose to the water. It also will pay at least $140,000 for violating permits issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the state Division iff Water Quality. The lion's share of the fine - $126,000 will go to The Nature Conservancy for a river restoration prqject; the remainder to the federal government The Provo River Coalition and the American Canoe Association sent UDOT a letter of intent to sue after discovering construction crews had apparently done some work last fall. After months of negotiations, UDOT signed a consent decree approved by a federal judge mandating it comply with tha permits. UDOT will realign 1,000 feet of the new road between Vivian Park and Frazier Park to pull a 150-fosection closer to the mountainside. The additional work will tack another $130,000 on to the two mile-lon- g project, including a pair of tunnels, estimated to cost $37 million. ot ot .....
